Girl Was Called a Monster Because of Her 'Batman' Face – Now She Looks Like a 'Princess' after 6 Surgeries
When a couple welcomed their daughter, they were astonished to see a black mark on her face, similar to a Batman mask. While they considered their little girl beautiful, not everyone reciprocated their sentiments, and many hurled belittling remarks at her.
Every child deserves to grow up in a supportive home environment, surrounded by loving parents and a strong family system. Knowing they have someone in their corner whom they can count on at all times offers immense comfort and joy to children.
We're all born different and unique, and our individuality enables us to stand out. While physical attractiveness tends to have its appeal, true beauty is known to lie skin deep. Today's story sheds light on a similar theme.
Carolina and her husband, Thiago Tavares, from Florida, didn't know what their parental journey would entail, at least not until they laid eyes on their baby. They were overjoyed to welcome their daughter, Luna Tavares-Fenner, into their hearts and home.
But she listened to the voice in her head, repeatedly telling her it was worth trying.
However, they were blissfully unaware of how the world would treat their ray of sunshine and what the future held for her. Little Luna was born with a gigantic dark spot covering a large portion of her innocent face.
The black birthmark resembled Batman's mask and dotted the youngster's eyes, nose, cheeks, and the forehead's middle part. Luna was nothing less than a superhero to her parents, but unfortunately, not everyone shared the same thoughts.
According to Carolina, a lady in a Florida church was rude toward her baby girl, going as far as labeling her adorable daughter a "monster." Deeply hurt and upset by the woman's remarks, Luna's mom decided to do something so nobody would hurt her little girl's feelings.
Thereafter, the Tavareses embarked on a journey that took them outside the U.S. for the sake of their little princess. In 2019, Carolina explained why she considered traveling for her daughter's treatment and the criticism she received along the way.
She recalled how people called her crazy and tried to convince her otherwise. But she listened to the voice in her head, repeatedly telling her it was worth trying.
Carolina said she felt a solid motherly instinct, prompting her to go the extra mile for her daughter. Unbothered by people's remarks and unsure about the consequences, the devoted mother took the long journey solely for her little angel.
She and her husband raised tens of thousands of dollars to fund their daughter's treatment abroad, where they were also supported by an anonymous donor, whom they called a "miracle."
The Parents' Struggle & Their Daughter's Happiness
Little Luna was said to have congenital melanocytic nevus—the scientific name for the dark moles dotting her face. Fortunately, her parents' trip abroad helped, and incredible results were achieved after only a few operations, which the doctors claimed prevented her from developing skin cancer.
He admired her cooperation, which was quite unlikely as children are generally scared of doctors.
According to the tot's doctor, Pavel Popov, the nevus was able to vanish after just six operations. While the medical aspect had been taken care of, Dr. Popov said the treatment wasn't yet finished, and after giving Luna some rest, they would proceed with the aesthetic surgeries.
Dr. Popov shared that he and his team would leave no stone unturned to ensure Luna felt confident in her skin and her physical appearance growing up. Calling the initial treatment a success, he said he wasn't sure about the exact timeline of the complete cosmetic procedure.
Satisfied with the results achieved from Luna's surgery, the doctor hailed the toddler for her loyalty and strength. He admired her cooperation, which was quite unlikely as children are generally scared of doctors.
He recalled how the Floridian tot brought her dolls to the clinic every time and asked him to treat them as well. Dr. Popov reportedly attached a plaster to the dolls' faces to please the little girl, which made his adorable patient happy.
Dr. Popov said he couldn't state the cosmetic treatment's duration with certainty as it depended on factors beyond his control, such as visas and pandemic restrictions.
On the other hand, Luna's parents were thankful that their daughter's treatment didn't require invasive or aggressive surgical procedures, which were common elsewhere and extremely painful.
Discussing his cute patient's progress during the treatment, Dr. Popov revealed that Luna had started talking and confidently expressed, "My black spot has gone. I am a princess."
A Few Hiccups & Little Luna's Life Now
While Luna's "Batman" mark was removed after photodynamic therapy, unavailable in the U.S., it reportedly resulted in severe scarring on her eyelids. That was where Dr. Thomas Johnson from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute decided to help.
Noticing how little Luna's eyelids could not close and turn out because of the scars, he knew something needed to be done.
To prevent the eye from losing its moisture and avoid other serious complications, like ulceration, corneal scarring, and permanent vision or eye loss, Dr. Johnson decided to undertake a procedure to protect the eyes.
On April 11, 2022, Luna was said to have undergone a treatment to release the scar tissue covering her lower eyelid with a healthy graft of skin placed over the exposed region. Post-surgery, the toddler wore a pressure patch for a week to increase blood flow to the area.
The then-two-year-old Luna is a little grown-up and loves displaying her lovable and cheerful side. With her radiant smile and gorgeous tresses, she carries hope and light in her eyes.
On April 9, 2023, the youngster was beaming joyfully as she posed alongside her parents during their Easter celebration. Luna always looks ecstatic in her parents' company, who like spoiling her with their love and endless surprises.
Luna finally has a bright and prosperous future awaiting her, thanks to her parents' efforts and constant love. We wish her nothing but love and happiness as she enters her teenage years, and we're sure she'll impress everyone with her charming personality!
