E. Jean Carroll Had Two Husbands Though Never Became a Mother

E. Jean Carroll, a renowned journalist and advice columnist, has led a life filled with various experiences, but motherhood has not been one of them. Despite being married twice, she did not have children and has kept her personal life away from the limelight.

E. Jean Carroll is a highly accomplished journalist known for her influential column. In addition to her successful career in print media, she has also made an impact in television and literature.

Her Emmy Award nomination for writing on "Saturday Night Live" highlights her versatility and ability to engage audiences with her wit and humor. Furthermore, she has received critical acclaim for her book "Hunter: The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter Thompson."

Carroll, who founded the first Darwinian Dating Coach site, has been a contributing editor for Esquire and Outside. However, she is best known for penning the most popular column for young female Americans, Ask E. Jean, featured on Elle.

The column is considered the longest-running editorial piece making her "the longest-running advice columnist" of all time. The column was a fixture on Elle from 1993 until 2019. Meanwhile, fellow journalist Elwyn Lopez's journalism career has also been eventful.

Elizabeth Jean Carroll Was Married Twice

Besides her illustrious journalism career, E. Jean Carroll's love life is also interesting. The Michigan native has been married twice, just like the late actor Richard Harris, and both her unions ended in divorce.

Carroll's first marriage was to writer and former editor Stephens Byers, with whom she cohabited in Montana before her journalism career took off. However, there is little information about him online.

The former couple's marriage ended in 1984, and according to Byers, they both decided to have an "amicable" divorce. In a 2019 interview, he described Carroll as "one of the most honest women I've ever known."

After their split, she wed former television anchor John Johnson in the 1980s, but the couple parted ways in 1990. Johnson was one of the first Black producers for network television in New York City.

Within his three-decade-long career, he also worked as a news reporter and anchor for WCBS, WABC, and other media houses. Johnson covered the prison release of Nelson Mandela and the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

Apart from his time on screen, he also penned books, filmed documentaries, and started a painting career. He had an art studio in his home, including a photography studio for his wife, after he remarried. His second wife is Ann Yih, a retired news producer.

Elizabeth Jean Carroll Doesn't Speak about Her Current Status & She Doesn't Have Kids

Carroll, who started writing at six and a half, has had a successful journalism career but has remained tight-lipped about her personal life and prefers to keep her private life away from the spotlight.

Little is known about her romantic relationships in the past, as there are only reports of her having been married twice back in the day, including her accusing her second husband of strangling her.

Carroll, who won the "Miss Cheerleader USA" competition in 1964, was born to Betty and Tom Carroll on December 12, 1943. She spent her childhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is the older sibling of four kids.

However, she never had children, much like singer Trisha Yearwood, and is glad she does not have them. During an interview in October 2017, the author shared things she liked doing, including staying up late and living "like 90 in between."

In addition, she revealed, "I get up around noon, and I stagger outside out this door, and I throw up my arms, I thank God I don’t have children!"

At the time, Carroll was said to be living alone on a small island in the woods of upstate New York. She had a shed with names of books that influenced her growing up painted on it. It also had the names of her eight dogs: Marquis, Fortuna, Deluxe, Punky, Heidi, Tits, Bloody, and Hepburn.

In terms of what she got up to in her premises, she hiked around her home daily for three miles, stating it kept her looking young at age 75. When asked what was the best piece of advice that she had ever given, Carroll revealed, "Eat, drink, and be merry, that's it. That's my advice," said the advice columnist.
