Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Ex-wife Now Called ‘Old’ - He Still Keeps Her Pics at Home & Feels Guilty about Divorce
- Maria Shriver went from living in the Kennedy family's shadow to Schwarzenegger's.
- The couple's 10-year divorce proceedings finally ended two years ago.
Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger were the Hollywood "it couple" for many years. However, it all came crashing down when the truth about Schwarzenegger's extramarital affair emerged.
While the couple shocked fans when they announced their separation, their divorce wasn't finalized until ten years later. Now, they are friendly and spend time with their children despite their complicated past.

On Mother's Day this year, Shriver and Schwarzenegger's daughter, Katherine, shared a photo carousel on Instagram in honor of her mother. Among the photos posted were some of Shriver on a Mother's Day outing with her daughter, her son-in-law, Chris Pratt, and her grandchildren.
Paparazzi caught Shriver walking with her granddaughter in her arms, wearing a floral purple dress and matching jacket. The grandmother-granddaughter duo was captured having sweet moments outside their church, followed by brunch.

However, when fans saw Shriver out with her daughter and grandchildren on Mother's Day, they were not complimentary. When the story was shared on Facebook, Shriver received terrible remarks from fans who didn't think she looked suitable for her age. One said the photos of the former beauty queen and her granddaughter looked "creepy," while another lamented:
"She has aged 100 years. Her daughter is the same way. They look old."
From Kennedy’s Shadow to Schwarzenegger’s
Shriver and Schwarzenneger first met after being introduced to each other at Robert F. Kennedy's tennis tournament in 1977. They began dating shortly after.

Nearly eight years after the couple began their romantic relationship, Schwarzenegger finally popped the question, and the pair became engaged in August 1985. They tied the knot the following April.
In December 1989, they welcomed their first child, Katherine. Two years later, Shriver gave birth to the pair's second daughter, Christina, and two years after that, in 1993, the couple welcomed their first son, Patrick. Christopher completed the brood in September 1997.
They lived as a happy family for many years, with Schwarzenegger and Shriver remaining active in the Hollywood sphere and their children pursuing their own paths in life. However, they would not live peacefully forever.

In May 2011, Shriver and Schwarzenegger released a joint statement confirming their marriage's dissolution. They shared:
"This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us. After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship."
They then mentioned that it was a private matter and that neither they nor their family or friends would further comment on the incident or the state of their high-profile marriage.

Even though their marriage was no more, the couple remained good friends and co-parents to their children. They moved on with their personal lives after the announcement in 2011, but their family remained intact as they shared special occasions and holidays throughout.
In 2020, sources close to the couple confirmed that they had always remained friendly and kind to one another for the sake of their children and grandchildren and enjoyed one another's company.

Finally, in 2021, news that the couple's divorce had been finalized broke. The finalization came nearly a decade after Shriver initially filed the divorce papers. Shriver received half of Schwarzenegger's earnings from the years they were married, including his pension fund.
Schwarzenneger's Affair, 10-Year Divorce Proceedings and Relationship with Shriver
After Shriver and Schwarzenegger announced their separation, they revealed why they had decided to end their marriage. The "True Lies" actor had an extramarital affair, which resulted in a son.
Talking about how it felt to break up his family and have another son to think about, he confessed: "I'm to blame for it." Schwarzenegger admitted:
"I had personal setbacks, but this was, without any doubt, the biggest setback and the biggest failure."
He then reflected on his situation, saying it's always easy to be competent in hindsight. However, at the time, he had to find a way to make the best of the situation. He even tried therapy with Shriver, which he said was a huge mistake.
Schwarzenegger admitted he didn't feel he had to speak to anybody else about what he did because he had apologized to Shriver. He also apologized to his children for everything he had done to them.
Even though Shriver moved out of their family home when she and her husband separated, they talked throughout. And now, eleven years after their separation and eventual divorce, Shriver and Schwarzenegger have remained close.
Schwarzenegger once described Maria as a "terrific mother" and said that even though they were no longer together, they worked together for the sake of their four children. He mentioned they both supported their children in anything they decided to do.
While many other Hollywood parents encourage their children not to follow a showbusiness dream, Shriver and Schwarzenegger tell their children to do anything that makes them happy.
Schwarzenegger also admitted that it was difficult to regain his children's trust and have them allow him to be friendly with their mother after what he did.
While the separation happened years ago, and their divorce has only recently been finalized, Schwarzenegger and Shriver have been known to spend significant moments together happily.
In addition to the celebrations and special occasions showing how close the two are, an October 2020 Instagram photo of Schwarzenegger proved they still had a connection beyond their separation.
In the photo, Schwarzenegger sits in front of an iPhone, which is recording him. In the caption, he mentioned he was recording the "Unfinished Business Summit," but the background is significant in this photograph.
Schwarzenegger was in his home when the photo was taken, and in the background, many images can be seen, some of which are of Shriver. Others are family photos amid other decorative items — an inspirational story of coming together for the greater good indeed.
