Claudio Carlos Basso was born in Paris in 1959. However, he spent much of his childhood in Italy, the country he credits for his exposure to art. On his 14th birthday, Basso received a Russian copy of a 2 ¼ Rolleyflex camera. He has been a photographer since.
He relocated to Milan a few years later after a famous fashion photographer offered him a job. However, it wasn't until Basso was 21 that he landed his big breakthrough Italian Vogue art director Alberto Nodolini's mentorship. Basso said:
