Single Dad John Travolta Marks Father’s Day Sharing Photo with 2 Kids, Misses Eldest Son Who Died at 16
- "Pulp Fiction" star John Travolta has experienced a great deal of loss in his lifetime.
- The Hollywood actor lost his eldest son, who was only 16 years old when he unexpectedly passed away.
- To add insult to injury, he then lost his wife a couple of years following their son's tragic passing, leaving him to raise his remaining two kids as a single father.
Outside of being a phenomenal actor with an illustrious career, John Travolta is a doting father. The actor shares three kids with his late wife, Kelly Preston, of which the eldest tragically passed away unexpectedly at just 16 years old in 2009.
Jett Travolta (the pair's eldest son) sadly passed away while the entire family was on vacation in the Bahamas. According to the report produced by the Coroner, Jett had suffered from a seizure and hit his head at the time of his death.

Eleven years later, his mother, Preston, died in 2020 at 57 from breast cancer, diagnosed two years before her passing. She and Travolta met on the "The Experts" set and were married for 28 years.
To commemorate what would have been her 59th birthday in October last year, her loving husband shared a tribute to her on Instagram, expressing how much everyone dearly misses her. Similarly, last year on April 14, Travolta posted a heartwarming birthday dedication to his late son on what would have been his 29th birthday.
In the birthday tribute to his late son, Travolta posted a nostalgic black and white photograph of the two of them together. In the picture, the father and son, who look identical, showed their pearly whites while hugging each other and posing for the camera. Travolta's tearjerking caption read:
"My dearest Jetty, I miss you more than words can say. I think about you every day. Happy Birthday, love, your Dad."
Posting tributes and dedications to family members is a frequent occurrence for the Travolta family. A few months before passing, Preston took to her Instagram to celebrate her husband on Father's Day in 2020. In her loving post, she included two pictures - the first showed herself, Travolta, and their remaining two children - Ella and Ben Travolta, cheesing for the camera.
The second picture showcased the late Jett and his dad by the beach. In her caption, she referenced Travolta as the best father and expressed how much she and her children adore him. Fast forward to this year's Travolta Father's Day post, which looked undeniably different from the previous one.
Single dad Travolta posted a picture of himself, Ella, and Ben all sitting on a couch with their family dog, smiling at the camera, and he wished all the fathers worldwide a happy day. An outpouring of loving comments from fans ensued, complimenting the beautiful family. He often posts pictures and videos of him and his children getting up to all sorts of family fun, which his fans love to see.
Kelly Preston and John Travolta Were Devastated after They Tragically Lost Their Son, Jett Travolta
Preston and Travolta's firstborn suffered a seizure while their family was holidaying in the Bahamas, tragically leading to his demise in 2009. When the seizure occurred, he hit his head against a bathtub in the family's vacation home.
Naturally, Travolta and Preston were devastated, and though they mourned the loss of their son in private, both parents opened up briefly about their son being autistic in their dedication posts, commemorating their son's life. A decade after Jett's unfortunate passing, in 2019, his mom shared a rare picture of herself and Travolta, showering him with love, with kisses to each of his cheeks, and him cheesing for the camera in the middle.
The "Look Who's Talking" star admitted that he began to feel saturated by everyone else's grief surrounding him, so much so that he expressed not knowing what to do.
In the caption, Preston mentioned the fact that April - Jett's birth month - is also Autism Awareness Month and sent a loving and supportive message to children with autism and fellow parents who are raising children with autism. Three years after Jett's passing, Preston was being interviewed on "The Doctors," and she opened up about Jett's autism:
"[Jett] was autistic. He had seizures, and when he was very young, he had Kawasaki Syndrome."
A devastated Travolta also had his moment of opening up about how deeply and adversely his son's death affected him. While speaking with Barry Norman, Travolta described the traumatic ordeal as the worst thing to ever happen to him in his life:
"[Losing Jett was] the worst thing that's ever happened in my life. The truth is, I didn't know if I was going to make it."
The "Saturday Night Fever" star went on to detail how painfully hopeless he felt and how he went through an extremely dark time in which life became somewhat meaningless for a while. Travolta emphatically stated:
"Life was no longer interesting to me, so it took a lot to get me better. [I] didn't want to wake up."
However, John disclosed how he sought recovery through the Church of Scientology, which he said was pivotal to helping him through the great difficulty over the following weeks and months. The Church helped and supported him for two years straight, from Monday through Sunday.
John Travolta Suffered a Tragic Loss for the Second Time with the Passing of His Wife, Kelly Preston
After grappling with the death of his son, Travolta experienced another gut-wrenching loss when the love of his wife, Preston, passed away three years ago. She had battled breast cancer for two years before she, unfortunately, succumbed to the illness.
A year after her passing, Travolta expressed how he dealt with the unfathomable grief he was burdened with. When it came to his method of grieving, Travolta divulged:
"I learned that crying and mourning over someone is something personal. Mourning is individual, and experiencing your own journey is what can lead to healing."
In the same vein of describing grief as something so intricately personal to the individual going through it, Travolta set forth some advice on how people can help their loved ones through dark times. According to the single dad of two, allowing the person to live in their grief and mourn is imperative.
The "Hairspray" talent added that the person providing the comfort and support should be careful not to complicate their feelings with the mourning individual going through their own grief. He stated that mixing two different woes then prohibits an adequate amount of space for the person who is directly suffering from the loss to mourn.
Travolta gave the example of one mourning a lost loved one at a funeral and having another person who is also sad come up to them and put their devastation on that individual. He explains:
"Let's say you lose someone, and at the funeral, you are very sad, [and] then another person approaches you who is feeling sadder and doesn't leave enough space for you to mourn. It would be like two boats plummeting to the bottom. That is my experience."
Travolta revealed the anecdote to be what he experienced when Preston died. The "Look Who's Talking" star admitted that he began to feel saturated by everyone else's grief surrounding him, so much so that he expressed not knowing what to do.
As a way to turn his experience into something that others who have lost dear loved ones can take solace and advice from, Travolta advised that people suffering from grief should seek out a safe place where they can simply mourn without any intrusion. His focus continues to be on his remaining two children, loving and supporting them through their endeavors.
Travolta has suffered insurmountable losses that many barely recover from in their lifetimes. However, he remains grateful for the two kids he has left and continues to be a loving and devoted father to Ella and Ben.
