Rod Stewart Still Enjoys ‘Cup of Tea in Bed’ with Wife of 15 Years: Their Romance after He Fought Cancer
- Singer-songwriter Rod Stewart once worried about his child Aiden, who experienced a health scare at a soccer game. He collapsed, and his parents thought he had "a heart attack."
- Rod has also had health scares over the years, including two cancer battles, ankle surgery, and a knee replacement. Hence his children want him to retire following 50 years in the music industry.
- The father of eight is happily married despite the circumstances and is a caring father and doting grandfather.
Pop and rock superstar Rod Stewart's youngest child, Aiden Stewart, experienced a health scare in December 2022 while at a sports game.
The British native revealed then that his son got rushed to the hospital after passing out at a soccer game for his Young Hoops Under-12s team.
"We thought my boy had a heart attack. He was going blue and was unconscious until he calmed down. It was scary, but it turned out to be a panic attack," said the father of eight.
The doting dad said his son wanted to put on a great performance at the game so that he could make him proud. Rod did not disclose where the incident occurred but revealed there was another medical scare at the game.
Another young boy fell and hit his head, and Rod expressed his disbelief saying since he started watching soccer, he had never seen two ambulances at a sports field.
The musician, who has been married three times, shares his son Aiden and his older brother Alastair with his third wife, Penny Lancaster.
Rod has six other children from five different mothers. He has a daughter named Sarah, whom he shares with his former girlfriend, Susannah Boffey. As teenagers, the pair put up their child for adoption.
The singer shares son Sean and daughter Kimberly with his second wife, Alana Stewart; daughter Ruby with his ex-girlfriend, Kelly Emberg and daughter Renee and son Liam with his first wife, Rachel Hunter.
Rod Dishes on His Long Marriage to Lancaster
The "Maggie May" hitmaker and Lancaster, an English model, met in the 1990s when he asked her to take pictures of him while he was on tour.
The Hollywood pair have been married since June 16, 2007, and have been a couple for over twenty years. Rod once shared valuable lessons on marriage and a long-term partnership.
"My relationship rule is, ‘Don't argue after a glass of wine – leave debating until the morning,'" said Rod, adding that he has always adored women and, while he had won some, he had also lost others along the way.
However, he stressed that it was not so much about having "the magic touch" but about being a much-improved individual who actually listened to his partner. "I met Penny in my 50s, and if I had not learned by that point in my life, I was never going to," Rod stated.
The lovebirds marked their 16th wedding anniversary in June 2023 but spent the day apart. In an interview, Rod explained Lancaster had "been away in Italy picking truffles" but would be returning home that evening. He expressed relief about her return and shared a laugh.
Rod and the television personality have one of the most solid unions in show business, and the fact that he looked forward to her return was very telling of their relationship. He revealed that he is a romantic at heart:
"I'm definitely more romantic than she is. I dress up every night for a formal dinner together. I absolutely love it. I love lighting all the candles."
In addition to showering his wife with love, Rod revealed that the couple, who reside in an enormous house in Essex, England, give each other space. They often find themselves being in the same house but seeing less of one another until nighttime.
The two wake up in the mornings and have tea together in bed. Afterward, they go about their day separately. Rod appreciates this because they are not always in each other's faces, and they consider themselves lucky.
When the duo celebrated ten years of marriage, they renewed their wedding vows in an intimate ceremony at their 18th-century Essex residence with friends and family present.
At the time, Lancaster said people marry hoping they would stay together, adding when she and her husband renewed their vows, they reassured themselves. Meanwhile, Rod said: "Penny is my whole world."
Rod's Life-Threatening Health Issues - His Kids Want Him to Retire
Rod is 78, and Lancaster is 52. Despite his age, the songwriter still shows eagerness to perform and has 40 worldwide shows lined up starting June 24, 2023.
The family patriarch, who is a grandfather of three, has over fifty years in the music business, and he does not seem to be slowing down, which has caused concern among his kids.
They are reportedly urging their father to retire to tend to his health and family, especially after he became a grandad for the third time. A close family friend dished on what the family thinks of Rod's consistent need to perform in his old age:
"With his health issues, considering his age, several of Rod's kids just think it is time for him to take a few years to focus on his health and his family."
Rod has been diagnosed with cancer twice. He was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer twenty years ago and secretly battled prostate cancer for three years.
He revealed he had beaten the illness in 2019, and months later, he underwent an ankle fusion surgery and a full knee replacement following a soccer injury.
In his autobiography, Rod spoke candidly about his struggle with his first battle with cancer and admitted he was scared and vulnerable, which was rare. With his second battle with the disease, he underwent three radiation treatments.
During a panel appearance on the show, "Loose Women," Lancaster revealed the cancer was so aggressive that it had spread to outside tissues. Luckily, the mother of two said it was an early detection.
