Man Proposes to Girlfriend of 5 Years & She Bans His Young Daughter from Their Wedding
A loving single father was looking forward to his upcoming wedding when his future wife decided she didn't want his daughter to be part of it. This caused tension between the would-be newlyweds, changing the course of their future.
In July 2023, a Reddit user with the username whoevenisthat5 took to one of the social media site's platforms to ask for relationship advice. The Redditor was a 45-year-old male with a daughter from a previous marriage whom he only referred to as "P."
The man said he and his ex-wife ended their marriage on good terms, sharing equal and joint custody of their daughter, who was eleven. After the man and his daughter's mother divorced, he met a woman.

He was pleased when his daughter and the woman he named "S" got along, and after five years of dating, he proposed to her. She was ecstatic and looked forward to planning their wedding immediately.
S started looking at venues and asking her friends to be her bridesmaids. She also told her fiancé she wanted her niece to be one of her flower girls, and the groom had no issue with that, but he also mentioned that he wanted his daughter to be a flower girl too.

To his surprise, S looked at him strangely and explained that she didn't think P would "fit the part." His fiancée's response took him aback, and he immediately went into protective mode.
What Was the Man's Reaction?
P's father expressed his dismay over S's decision to exclude his daughter from the wedding and insisted she should be part of it. But the bride kept her stance, explaining it was her wedding and her choice on who should be part of her entourage.

Because his fiancée wouldn't budge, the groom decided to put his foot down and said, if his daughter wasn't at the wedding, there would be no wedding. Then stormed out and took his daughter for some ice cream.
What upset him, even more, was P was aware of the wedding and was looking forward to putting on a pretty dress for the occasion. She assured him she would look pretty in whatever dress S made her wear, leading him to confess:
"This broke my heart, and I decided to text S."
The groom told the bride he would stay at a friend's place as he mulled over their situation. Meanwhile, S's mother texted him, insisting he was overreacting and that his daughter didn't need to attend the wedding. She also judged him harshly for even suggesting that the wedding could be canceled.

Bothered and confused, the man consulted Reddit users to find out if S's mother was right that he had gone too far by suggesting canceling the wedding or taking offense that his daughter wouldn't be part of it.
On a Facebook post about his story shared by the Mirror, readers left their opinions, most of which sided with the man. One person advised him to "ditch the fiancé, keep the daughter," while another wrote:
"Kids are worth more than any relationship!!! I'd run a mile if anyone gave me [that] ultimatum."

Another Facebook user believed S didn't deserve to be part of the man and his daughter's lives, speculating there was jealousy on the part of the bride-to-be.
Someone else said they wouldn't marry S with her attitude the groom should move on because she had shown him "her true colors."

In an update to his story, the groom shared with readers that he confronted the bride about her reasons for not wanting his daughter to be part of the wedding, and this prompted him to make a decision.
What Happened When the Groom Spoke to the Bride?
In his update, the poster shared his gratitude for the suggestions and kind words he received from readers. In response to some questions, he clarified that his daughter wasn't barred from being a flower girl because she was chubby, disabled, or wearing braces or glasses.

The groom also said he asked S if his daughter could be a groomsman, and that suggestion was also shot down. He revealed that his 39-year-old fiancée was the same race as P and that their marriage would've been her first.
The poster shared how he returned home to talk to S, and when he pulled into their driveway, his future mother-in-law was sitting in her car. He avoided her, went inside to speak to S, and found her at the kitchen table.
S didn't say anything, so he asked her why she didn't want P to be a part of the wedding party. He was shocked to learn that she had every intention of excluding his daughter from their lives once they were married.
She told him she was hoping that he would limit his time with P and only visit her during the holidays. She also said she banned P from the wedding because she didn't want her to be in their wedding photos at home since she wouldn't be around much.

At this, the groom kept his calm and simply took S's hand and pulled off her engagement ring. The bride started to tear up, saying they shouldn't call off the wedding over that issue and that she could change. But the man told S the damage was already done. He asked her to move her things out by the following week and return for anything else when P wasn't around.
The poster replied to the person's question revealing how cunning S had been throughout all the five years they were dating.

S stormed out upset, but her mother came by later and insisted the groom was being unreasonable. For his part, he couldn't imagine seeing his daughter just three to four times yearly, and the idea that his bride wanted him to give up his time with his daughter blew his mind.
The poster sat on his couch in shock, and while their honeymoon was supposed to be in Hawaii, he realized he would be going with his daughter instead.
The Redditor earned praise online for being a great father who deserved better. He was also assured that learning about his wife's intentions before the wedding was for the best.

They also affirmed his decision to call off the wedding claiming someone as cruel as S shouldn't be part of his daughter's life. In fact, according to one commenter:
"Wow. You dodged a major bullet.
The same commenter expressed confusion on why the man never saw this side of S. "Did she not give you any indication she wasn't thrilled that you were a dad?" the user asked. The man replied that S apparently hid her true feelings as she was always "super sweet" to his daughter.
