Gus Kenworthy Comes Out as Gay in a Tell-All Interview
In 2015, Kenworthy officially and publicly came out as gay in an interview, stating, "I guess I should start by saying I'm gay." On October 22, 2015, he posted the magazine issue on Twitter, where he was on the cover. He reiterated in the Tweet: "I am gay." Talking about his thoughts in the past, the actor has said:
"I decided I'd have my ski career, and then come out to my friends and live with my boyfriends or get married, but it would be a separate thing. But I got to a point where the pain of holding on to it became more than the pain of letting it go."
The actor continued, "It was damaging to be in the closet, damaging to not hold my boyfriend's hand if we were in public, damaging to be thinking, Oh, my God, what does that other person think of me right now?" Before coming out to the public, the retired Olympian had contemplated taking his own life at the thought of possible adverse reactions to the news of his sexuality.
Gus Kenworthy Dating Matt Wilkas
In 2018, Kenworthy kissed his then-boyfriend and actor Matthew Wilkas during a live television broadcast at the 2018 Winter Olympics. The two initially came into contact over social media, and while Wilkas was hesitant at first, the couple eventually began dating. In 2016, Kenworthy opened up about their relationship:
"All relationships take work, and we've definitely begun to realize that. I'm traveling and skiing and training and competing. He lives in New York; he can't really live in Denver."
Kenworthy further remarked, "Also, I was in a relationship from 18 to 23, and I still haven't really experienced that much sexually. I wouldn't want to ever sacrifice my relationship with Matt just to go out and get that out of my system..."
In 2019, the couple broke up in what was, according to a representative, an amicable split. The representative stated that the Olympian and Wilkas are still "close friends."
Gus Kenworthy's partner Adam Umhoefer

"They live together and Adam will be cheering on Gus from home during the Beijing Olympics...They like to keep as much about their relationship as private as they can, but they love and support one another endlessly."
