Rosalynn Carter Fights Dementia While Her Spouse of 77 Years Opts for Hospice Care

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter and her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, are among the longest-married famous couples, thanks to their consistent devotion to each other.

The much-admired duo has reportedly lived happily together at their home in Plains, Georgia. Rosalynn, who has been diagnosed with dementia, and Jimmy have been married for 77 years.

She is 95, and he is 98. The last time the duo had a public interview together was two years ago, and a news correspondent Steve Osunsami was the last to interview them.

At the time, Jimmy and Rosalynn were celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary. Osunsami said the two spoke very clearly, although Rosalynn was a bit slower than her spouse.

Jimmy's Hospice Care at the Couple's Home

In early 2023, Jimmy began Hospice Care at the couple's home. He joined hospice after several health scares. Initially, the Carter family believed Jimmy was in his final days.

However, his grandson has revealed that the former president has bounced back. Things have settled, and the loved ones are reportedly discussing his next birthday, October 2023.

In February 2023, the Carter Center released a statement on Twitter touching on the retired politician's several hospital stays. The message reads:

"[...] Former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care."

Jimmy's Wife Rosalynn Was Diagnosed with Dementia — He Remains by Her Side

With health issues plaguing Jimmy, the Carter Foundation additionally revealed in May 2023 that his beloved wife, Rosalynn, had been diagnosed with dementia:

"[...] She continues to live happily at home with her husband, enjoying spring in Plains and visits with loved ones."

Rosalynn has been an activist for mental health issues for much of her life. The advocate first started in the Governor's Mansion in Georgia, followed by the White House and then later, The Carter Center. Rosalynn has created a platform for people to talk openly about their own experience with the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer's.

In addition, despite how long she and Jimmy have been married, they keep the connection alive by doing things together. The lovebirds spend time outdoors, host visitors and still laugh together.

Jimmy and Rosalynn once shared the secret to their long-lasting marriage, which includes having a drink every night, reading the Bible daily, and exercising together.

The two first walked down the aisle in July 1946. They then welcomed four children together, their only daughter Amy Carter and sons Jack Carter, Donnel Carter, and James Carter. Jimmy, who served as the 39th President of the United States, and Rosalynn are also grandparents.
