Two Persons Claimed in 2001 That Tom Cruise Was Gay

In the past, Tom Cruise sparked gay rumors, which coincided with the fallout of his marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise's two notable lawsuits happened in 2001.

In May of that year, Cruise filed a $100 million defamation suit against adult film star Chad Slater, known by his stage name Kyle Bradford.

In a French interview, Slater claimed he had a gay romance with Cruise while the latter was still married to Kidman. According to Slater, Kidman discovered their relationship.

One month later, in June, Cruise faced a similar legal battle again. This time, to refute the claims made by Michael Davis, a publisher from a Los Angeles-based magazine, who asserted that the Hollywood actor was gay.

Cruise lodged a $100 million lawsuit against Davis, alleging that Davis sent anonymous letters to media outlets claiming to have a videotape of Cruise with another man.

Reportedly, Davis offered $500,000 as a reward to those who could provide him with evidence proving that Cruise was gay. However, Cruise's lawsuit argued that no such videotape existed.

Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields defended Cruise, highlighting that the actor's main concern was safeguarding his and Kidman's children and avoiding unnecessary publicity. Fields said:

"He doesn't want this out there. It's false and humiliating to them. There is no tape. These people, every time they do this, he'll sue them."

Cruise eventually dropped the case after Davis retracted his claim and agreed to a stipulation affirming that Cruise was "not, and never has been, homosexual and has never had a homosexual affair."

From firsthand experience, Fratto attested that Cruise was "not a homosexual."

In 2003, Cruise emerged victorious in the defamation case he filed against Slater, who admitted that his story was false and chose not to defend himself actively. Despite initially seeking $100 million, the court awarded Cruise $10 million.

A Late Conartist Believed Tom Cruise Was Not Gay

Amid the swirling rumors about Tom Cruise's sexuality, an unexpected voice emerged to defend the actor's real sexuality: Johnny Fratto, a former charismatic radio and TV personality and Hollywood entrepreneur.

Fratto was also a late con artist, jewel thief, and art forger who passed away in 2015. Before his death, Fratto shared his life in his 2017 memoir, "Now That I'm Dead, Here's The Real Dirt."

Tom Cruise's Gay Rumors Emerged amid His Crumbling Marriage to Nicole Kidman

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman first met in the early 1990s while filming "Days of Thunder." Shortly after finalizing his divorce from Mimi Rogers, Cruise tied the knot with Kidman in December 1990 in an intimate ceremony in Telluride, Colorado.

Their connection went beyond personal life as they continued to work together on various movie projects. Their last joint appearance on the big screen was in the 1999 film "Eyes Wide Shut," directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Kidman reflected on her and Cruise's relationship, saying that they were "happily married" when they starred in Kubrick's controversial film, which was about jealousy and infidelity between a married couple.

Unfortunately, the couple separated, and Cruise later filed for divorce from Kidman in February 2001, citing "irreconcilable differences." He also sought joint custody of their adopted kids, Isabella and Connor.

The pair's divorce was finalized later that year after a bitter legal battle over their $325 million fortune, which included their multiple homes and small airplanes.

Cruise never disclosed the reason for their split. However, he said Kidman knew the reasons behind their situation. He emphasized that she was the mother of his children and genuinely wished her well.

In addition, he brushed off the public's curiosity about their personal lives, stating that people should "mind their own business." He said his private life was not meant to sell newspapers.

Kidman and Cruise eventually married other people. Cruise married Katie Holmes in 2006 after dating Penélope Cruz. Holmes and the actor welcomed their daughter, Suri Cruise, but eventually parted ways in 2012.

Cruise remains a single man to this day. Kidman, also in 2006, exchanged vows with renowned country superstar Keith Urban with whom she welcomed two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith.
