The reported rift between Tom Cruise and his daughter, Suri Cruise, began soon after his divorce from her mother, Katie Holmes, in 2012. Although Tom and Suri communicated over the short period that followed, the pair allegedly became more and more estranged.

Suri Cruise took her first breath on April 19, 2006, several months before her parents, actors Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, tied the knot. She was a healthy baby who weighed seven pounds and seven ounces and measured 20 inches in height.

During an interview, her dad gushed about her birth, saying it was everything he and Katie wanted it to be. The experience was etched in Tom's mind as he said he kept "reliving" it; the Scientologist felt it was "spiritual" and "powerful."

While Katie still carried the youngster, Tom had even acquired an ultrasound machine to use until after Suri's birth, though many medical experts advised against the purchase. He was committed to being part of Suri's life in her early years, but that changed after he lost her custody to Katie.

Suri Cruise Is a Budding New York Fashionista

The 16-year-old currently lives with her mom in New York City. The pair are often seen traveling together in the city, and it's clear Suri has adopted the actress's sense of style. In September of last year, they were spotted wearing coordinated outfits as they prepared to go out of town.

Suri wore distressed denim shorts, a white top, and white sneakers, while Katie donned a red-and-white striped shirt with a denim button-up chambray skirt and matching red ballet flats. In December 2022, the two enjoyed dinner at Los Tacos No.1.

They donned coordinated outfits once more. Suri's mom sported an oversized fleece coat with black trousers and trainers, while she wore a similar-colored padded jacket with a fluffy black scarf wrapped around her neck, black joggers, and white sneakers.

Suri wore the padded jacket again, paired with brown trousers with large white stripes at the sides, a few days after last Christmas, as she and her mother were photographed at Newark Airport. The pair also exercises together now and then, with occasionally overlapping routines.

Suri was six years old when her mom filed for divorce from her dad. Although her parents didn't immediately divulge the reasons for their separation, many media outlets suggested Katie was trying to protect Suri from Scientology, despite having previously adopted the religion herself.

Tom – also previously married to Nicole Kidman with two children – eventually admitted that that was the case. Suri never joined Scientology, and many believed it was the main reason Tom stayed out of her life. However, sources close to the action star said he never wished for his family to fall apart.

He only received visitation rights – with sources claiming Katie only gained full custody after agreeing to be contractually bound from speaking ill of the Scientology church – which allowed him to see his daughter for up to 10 days a month.

Tom reportedly remained in touch with Suri through text messages and video calls but never visited her; he last saw her when she was seven. According to a source close to the predicament, his excuses for his absence were tight film schedules.

However, those excuses started carrying less weight with Suri, which affected their relationship. It's unknown if they're still in contact with each other at this point. They live far apart, too, with Suri in New York and Tom living in London, England, as of April 2021.

Although her relationship with her dad is strained, Suri's relationship with Katie – who now has a new partner – is solid and loving. The mom of one occasionally gushes about her daughter on her socials with birthday and Mother's Day tributes.

The "Batman Begins" star spoke candidly about how she chose to raise Suri, saying she wanted her to grow up strong, confident, and aware of her abilities and individuality. She said Suri already displayed those characteristics as a focused, talented, and hardworking individual.
