For most people, their wedding anniversary reminds them of one of the most important days of their lives. Every year, they do something special to celebrate their big day, and most people usually use flowers to express their love.
Some men gift their wives a bouquet of fresh flowers on this occasion, while others, like the man in today's story, don't think a bouquet would be enough. A farmer from Kansas, Lee Wilson, surprised his wife with around 1.2 million sunflowers.
How Did the Couple Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary?
70-year-old Lee met his wife Renée for the first time in high school. The couple went out to roller skate on their first date when the then-young Lee thought Renee was "the one" he had been looking for.
August 10, 2023, marked 50 years of the couple's wedding, so Lee decided to do something special to celebrate the occasion. Keeping it a secret from his wife, the man planted sunflower seeds on 80 acres of land with his son's help.
The father-son duo planted the seeds in May and waited about two months before showing the beautiful sunflower field to Renée. Lee shared:
"I put a lot of thought into it, and she always liked sunflowers, and I thought this is the year to plant sunflowers, so we planted her 80 acres of sunflowers."
After keeping it a secret for two months, Lee took his beloved wife to the beautiful golden field full of her favorite flowers, which Renée thought was the best idea to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. She said:
"It made me feel very special. It couldn't have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers."
The glorious sunflower field caught the attention of people passing by the plot of land in Kansas. Many people stopped by the area to capture the beautiful sight, while others enjoyed the view.
Sunflower, the state flower of Kansas, has a short life of up to a month, which means Lee and his son's hard work would soon wither. When asked if he would like to surprise his wife by planting more sunflowers next year, Lee said he wouldn't do it again:
"It's somebody else's turn next year."
Lee's unique way of expressing his love to his wife on their wedding anniversary has made rounds on social media. Netizens appreciated the man's heartfelt efforts and wished them luck.
One Facebook user wrote, "Wow, that's a beautiful gift. Plus, so many others can enjoy them." Meanwhile, another person thought Renée was lucky to have Lee as her husband, saying, "She is truly loved."
