Body of Maryland Mom of 5 Found after She Disappeared from Trail – Her Family Reveals Another Tragedy
- A Maryland mother of five reportedly left her house to walk on a nearby trail before she went missing. Her boyfriend filed a missing report hours after she left home.
- The police began their search and soon received a call from someone claiming he found a woman's body on the trail.
- The woman's family said her death wasn't the first tragedy they experienced in the past week.
A mother of five, Rachel Morin, reportedly went missing on the night of August 5, 2023. The Maryland resident was reported missing by her boyfriend, Richard Tobin, after she didn't return home.
According to the Harford County Sheriff's office, the 37-year-old's boyfriend said she left her house at about 6 p.m. on Saturday to go to the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air, Maryland. Tobin contacted the police when Rachel didn't return home.
The police said Tobin filed a report after he found his girlfriend's car around five hours after she left. The authorities began searching for Rachel, which attracted the residents' attention.
The investigators updated the public through the Harford County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page. They posted Rachel's photos on their page, asking people to help them find her.
Netizens responded to the post by sharing it over 12,000 times and posting more than 2,000 comments under it. The search for Rachel continued for two days before a person, who read about Rachel online, claimed that he found a body on the trail.
What Happened to the Woman?
Upon receiving a call from the volunteer, the police arrived at the spot where the female's body was found and examined it. "The identity of the victim, as well as the cause and manner of death, are still under investigation," the Harford County Sheriff's Office updated people through their Facebook page.
The police firmly believed the dead body was Rachel's, but they were waiting for the medical examiner to determine the exact identity. However, authorities were sure her death wasn't accidental. Sheriff Jeff Gahler revealed in his official statement:
"Sadly, it's a homicide case."
The trail was closed to the public while the police continued their investigation at the crime scene. Gahler shared that the detectives were working "aggressively" to find more details about the incident, but they didn't have any suspects on their list.
Gahler also asked the residents of the houses along the trail to check their security camera footage to see if it recorded something related to the case. The footage might help the authorities find out what happened to Rachel after she went for a walk on the trail.
While the authorities worked on the case, Rachel's family was devastated to learn about her untimely death. Her sister, Rebekah Morin, created a GoFundMe page to help her mother cover the funeral expenses. Rebekah said:
"This was not an accidentally [sic] death, and she did not go willingly, and she deserves a funeral worthy of her beauty."
Currently, the family has raised over $34,000 out of the $65,000 target amount. Rebekah and her family thanked people for donating generously and sharing messages of support in their time of grief.
Soon after Rahcel's body was found on the trail, Tobin shared a post on Facebook to let people know he had nothing to do with his girlfriend's death. He had been arrested multiple times in the past for different reasons, but he insisted he wasn't behind her death. He declared:
"I love Rachel. I would never do anything to her, let the family and I grieve. Yes, I have a past, but I also have 15 months clean and have changed as a person."
What Was the Second Tragedy in the Family?
Rachel's death wasn't the first tragedy the family went through in the same week. Rebekah revealed that her brother lost his little one to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and the family was still mourning when the police found Rachel's dead body.
"My brother Nathan and his wife Magan lost their sweet Lily Beth a week ago," Rebekah said as the family dealt with two losses within a short time. The family hopes the person responsible for Rachel's death will be found as the police continue their investigation.
