‘I Fit the Risk Profile’: Sally Field Got HRT Treatment after Her Bones Began to Get Thinner over 16 Years Ago
- American actress Sally Field was diagnosed with a bone-thinning disorder despite leading a healthy lifestyle.
- As her bones grew thinner, she opted to start Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
- Fortunately, Field was able to endure and take charge of her health as she battled the ailment.
Famous American actress Sally Field, 76, known for her extensive and highly accomplished works on both the silver screen and stage productions, was almost 60 years old when she was diagnosed with osteoporosis. The condition severely impacts one's bones, causing them to grow thinner over time.
As the disorder attacks the durability of the bones, the likelihood of bone fractures becomes heightened in risk. Given that the condition presents no symptoms until the occurrence of a bone fracture, its commonly referred to as the "Silent Disease."

Before she was diagnosed with the ailment, Field was always active in her everyday life. She frequently went biking, hiking and partook in extreme yoga.
However, after visiting her doctor, scans showed that her hip bones and spine began thinning. This, as Field confirmed, happened with no foreshadowing of a warning, as she explained that she had not seen or felt any symptoms.

According to the "Mrs. Doubtfire" star, she had always suspected that she stood a great chance of acquiring the condition. Field expressed:
"I always knew I fit the risk profile. I was thin, small-boned, Caucasian, and heading towards age 60."

Sally Field Sought Medical Intervention to Recover from Her Bone-Thinning Condition
After finding out about the thinning of her bones and before she received her diagnosis, Field began Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), a method typically used for menopause intervention as well as bone protection. Making use of HRT helped to heal Field's bones significantly.
So much so to the point that the condition of her bones immediately worsened when she stopped using the intervention. Upon another trip to the doctor, they noticed that her bone density had plummeted.

Another series of tests also showed that Field was vitamin D deficient, which severely impacted her body's calcium levels. Thus, her doctors prescribed vitamin D supplements. However, the worsening of the disorder thwarted Field's hopes that the supplements would help. Field recalled:
"Eight months later, we tested again—and the bone mass went down even more significantly. It was the full-fledged condition. No longer just a risk, it happened."

Field was diagnosed with osteoporosis by then. Thankfully, after proper medical intervention and Field's continued commitment to leading a healthy and active lifestyle, she began making a steady recovery back to good bone health.
The "Not Without My Daughter" talent also made it her priority to encourage and support other women to look after their health. Of aging and specific ailments, like bone deterioration over time that typically plague many older people, Field stated:
"Aging successfully isn't just about looking good, it's about having a good solid feeling about your health and yourself as a healthy person."
Once diagnosed with osteoporosis, Field became an avid learner about how the condition affects her and how she can mitigate the symptoms from presenting challenges in her life. She began treating her osteoporosis with a new once-a-month medicine recommended by her doctors.

Sally Field Is Now in Her 70s & Her Health Has Improved for the Better
Since stepping into her 70s, Field's health has been on a positive steady incline compared to where she found herself years ago. Although she acknowledged in a past interview that many consider 70-somethings as old, Field shared the following perspective:
"I've gathered strength behind my years. I have value that doesn't come when you're 50 or 40 or 30 or 20. It doesn't come until you've been in that saddle for a number of years."

She went on to describe the process of aging, no matter how old one turns, as a coming of age in each stage of life. Such was the case when she was just a teen battling depression.
Field has been open about her bout of depression at the young age of 19, when she starred in "The Flying Nun." She described her battle with the disorder as an extremely lonely period in her life when she found it quite difficult to relate to herself and connect with her internal feelings. Her depression then spearheaded a battle with an eating disorder, which had adverse effects on her self-image.

Apart from paying close attention to her health and continuing to look after herself, Field devotes a massive portion of her life to putting her family first. She is the doting mother of three children, all of whom were welcomed during the course of her two marriages.
She shares Peter and Eli Craig, born in 1969 and 1972, respectively, with her first ex-husband, Steven Craig. After their divorce in 1975, Field went on to marry film producer Alan Greisman, and the former couple welcomed Field's youngest son, Samuel Greisman, in 1987, before the pair divorced in 1994.

For Field, her three sons mean the world and more to her. While speaking about them in a previous interview, Field gushed:
"The three things I'm most proud of in my life are my sons. They are kind, loving, productive people... I'm not the kind of person that has a life separate from them... That's my everything."

Her eldest son, Peter, has built an accomplished career as a screenplay writer, having written for both parts of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" franchise. Similarly, his younger brother, Eli, has garnered various entertainment credits for acting, writing, directing, and editing.
Field's last born, Samuel, has made a name for himself as a film director. Far from being fussed about looking for her next suitor, Field devotes her focus to her family, which also includes her five grandchildren.
