A woman and her fiancé were ready to get married at the end of the month. At the last minute, however, something made the bride decide to cancel everything and have a simple courthouse wedding instead. The woman's decision stemmed from what she found out from her cousin, and she decided to write about it on Reddit.

"My wedding is supposed to be at the end of this month but I'm planning to cancel everything...because my cousin told me my family were making bets," the woman explained in an account she posted on Reddit.

[Her sister-in-law] joked that they needed to ensure the fiancé didn't realize he made a mistake until after the wedding.

She learned that other family members had been placing bets on how long it would take for her fiancé to realize she wasn't the right woman for him. The family believed her fiancé would want a submissive homemaker as a wife, and that was not her.

Her Sister-in-Law Decided to Make Things Worse

Upset and furious at this discovery, the woman decided to confront her entire family. When she did, they claimed it was a harmless joke and that a part of the joke was true—that it wasn't in her to be a submissive housewife, which her fiancé would want.

To make matters worse, her sister-in-law decided to make another joke. She joked that they needed to ensure the fiancé didn't realize he made a mistake until after the wedding. At this point, the woman was livid.

She couldn't understand why her sister-in-law had to make things much worse than they already were. Disappointed at how her family perceived her and her fiancé, she threatened to cancel the wedding.

Rather than apologizing, her family teased her that she couldn't cancel. They claimed canceling less than a month before the wedding would get the town talking and disappoint her in-laws.

At that point, the woman didn't care. Her family could explain why the wedding ceremony never happened. But her parents pressed further and asked her not to cancel the wedding. They warned her that she would regret it in the future, and it would not only be embarrassing for her but for the entire family.

Despite her parents' pleas not to cancel the wedding, the woman was determined. She wondered whether she was wrong for making such a sudden decision, but it also didn't sit well with her that her family was betting against her marriage.

The Woman Asked for Opinions on Reddit

People weighed in on the situation on Reddit. While they made it clear that the woman was not at fault, they wondered why she didn't just uninvite her family to the wedding instead.

Some people who went through similar situations shared what they decided to do and the outcomes of their decisions. They hoped to serve as inspirations to the couple to follow their hearts and just cut off the woman's toxic family.

"Cancel invites for whoever is in on this joke, hire security, and make sure they are escorted out if they show up," one suggested.

However, the woman responded to the comment and said her family would come even if she uninvited them. Her best bet was to cancel the wedding and have a simple one without them.

Others wondered if the woman's fiancé knew about the situation and whether he supported her decision to cancel the wedding. "Okay but also this is partly her fiancé's decision as well. She doesn’t even mention him in this decision/threat," one noted.

Many wondered whether she asked her fiancé if he actually wanted a submissive housewife, as her family believed. While it would put the issue to rest, the woman never answered any of these types of comments.

However, the woman later clarified that her husband-to-be knew about the situation and said it was her choice whether she wanted to push through with the wedding. She added that all the man cared about was getting married to her and not the wedding ceremony itself.

If you were in the woman's shoes, what would you have done? Should she cancel the wedding or continue as planned?
