It takes a toll on one's mental health when something unfortunate happens to them suddenly. The tragic event might leave them sad and demotivated. They might face difficulty returning to their routine life.
The woman in today's story faced an unexpected situation as a teenager. Lucy Edwards was only 17 when she permanently lost her eyesight. Her entire life was ahead of her when a rare genetic condition called incontinentia pigmenti turned her life upside down.

At that point, Edwards had just started dating her now-husband, Ollie Cave. Their relationship was only two months old when she lost her eyesight. At that time, she had no idea she would tie the knot with him a decade later. She said:
"I never envisaged that I would walk down the aisle to Ollie as a blind person."

Now working as a broadcaster, influencer, and activist, Edwards married her fiancé, Cave, on August 31, 2023, in London, England. The thought of walking down the aisle while not being able to see her guests didn't attract her, so she decided to do something special. She ensured her guests and Cave experienced what it felt like to live without seeing anything.
What Happened at Her Wedding?
The young woman always thought she would see her guests smile as she walked down the aisle, but she couldn't do this anymore. As a result, she decided to blindfold everyone, including her fiancé, so they could experience her entrance without looking at her.

Edwards posted a video on TikTok from her big day where she was seen getting out of her vehicle in a beautiful white dress. Then, she walked towards Cave while all the guests were blindfolded.
Her fiancé, who couldn't see how his bride looked, held her hand and hugged her. Soon, the guests removed their blindfolds, but Cave didn't because Edwards wanted him to feel her dress. She wrote in her video:
"Before Ollie took off his blindfold, we had a moment for him to feel my dress and understand why I chose it."

Then, the groom knelt and used his hands to feel Edwards' dress. He imagined what it looked like and understood how Edwards chose it without looking at it. She wrote in the video's caption:
"This was such an important experience for us both even though Ollie isn't blind, but we thought it was really important for him and all of my guests to experience what it's like for me in the most important moment of our life so far."

The bride wanted everyone to live the most important moment of her life like she did―without seeing anything around her. After the event, Edwards said her guests told her they enjoyed her entrance the most. She also said it was an emotional moment for her father and husband.
What Did Her Tragedy Teach Her?
Losing her eyesight as a teenager was a traumatizing experience for Edwards, but she didn't let it stop her from doing what she wanted. She felt lucky to have Cave as her husband because he accepted and loved her as she was.

By blindfolding her guests and groom at her wedding and posting a video of it online, Edwards wanted to prove that people don't need eyesight to enjoy the special moments of their lives. She said:
"I wanted to show that you don't need eyesight to have vision."
Since losing her eyesight, Edward knew she wouldn't see the most important moments of her life. She also knows she won't be able to see her children after birth, but that doesn't stop her from living her life and being grateful for it.
Her TikTok video has since received over 6 million views, and the numbers are still increasing. By reaching a large audience through her social media platforms, Edwards wants to tell people they can do things the way they want. They don't always have to stick to societal norms and sacrifice their desires.
