Virginia Springsteen Shave: Bruce Springsteen’s Sister Inspired His Song ‘The River’
Virginia Springsteen Shave was born into a blue-collar family in Freehold, New Jersey. Her brother Bruce Springsteen made her story an anthem for the disenfranchised youth of the eighties.
Middle child Virginia Springsteen Shave has kept a low profile compared to her brother, Bruce Springsteen, and her younger sister, Pamela Springsteen.
The death of the family member she was named after loomed large in the Springsteen household for many years. Due to circumstances, she started a family when she was a teenager.

Virginia Springsteen Shave Was Named for an Aunt Who Died Tragically
Virginia "Ginny" Springsteen was born in early 1951, the second child of Doug Springsteen and Adele Zerilli Springsteen. The little girl was named after her aunt, Virginia Springsteen, who died at five when she was hit by a truck while riding her tricycle.
Adele thought they were doing "the best thing" when naming their daughter after her in-law's late daughter but conceded that "it wasn't." This was evident when the Springsteen family, having outgrown their apartment, was compelled to move in with Doug's parents.
While Bruce's grandparents doted on him to the extent that he assumed that they, and not his parents, were his primary caregivers, the elder Springsteen neglected their granddaughter. When she was two, Virginia Jr. asked to be left with other adults during the day.
Virginia Springsteen Shave Felt 'Exposed' When She Heard 'The River'
As a Freehold Regional High School freshman, Virginia Jr. dated George Theiss, whom her brother would later join in the band Castiles. During her senior year, she fell pregnant with her boyfriend, Michael "Mickey" Shave, a professional rodeo rider.
Virginia Jr. and Micheal Sr.'s son, Michael E. Shave Jr., died expectantly.
The young couple wed in a small ceremony. According to a 2012 biography of Bruce, his track "The River" was a "word-for-word description of the life" Virginia Jr. led after her unplanned pregnancy.
Social and economic inequalities are explored in the song through the tale of teenage parents. Virginia Jr. heard "The River" for the first time when the rocker debuted the song at Madison Square Garden. She remembers:
"It was wonderful that he wrote it and all, but every bit of it was true. And here I am [in the audience], completely exposed. I didn't like it at first — though now it's my favorite song."
According to an obituary, Virginia Jr. and Micheal Sr.'s son, Michael E. Shave Jr., died expectantly on April 14, 2023, at 53. The pair has two other kids, Christopher Shave and Marisa Potts. Bruce dedicated "I'll See You in My Dreams" to Micheal Jr. at a show shortly after his death.

Pamela Springsteen Is Virginia Springsteen Shave's Sister
Pam Colleen Springsteen was born in February 1963, when her siblings Virginia Jr. and Bruce Springsteen were tweens. She became a photographer and has a snap with her big sister holding her while sitting on a stoop on her profile.
In the '80s, she followed Julianne Phillips, her brother's first wife, into acting. She had parts in "The Facts of Life" and "Family Ties," was a cheerleader in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" with Sean Penn, and was in Tina Turner's music video for "What's Love Got to Do with It."
