  • A dad made a bold move of stripping down to a crop top to criticize a school district's new dress code.
  • While people rally for freedom of expression, some parents think there should still be some limit to what children should wear to school.
  • The school district's decision caused parents to clamor for change, and a dad made it more visual for them to understand his point.

A school district made significant changes to what their students could wear to school, and parents were outraged by their decision. They felt the new dress code policy was obscene and that it didn't set a good example of how the students should dress in a professional setting.

The outrage came after the school district removed an integral part of the dress code. The dress code used to prohibit children from wearing clothes that "immodestly exposes the chest, abdomen, midriff, genital area, or buttocks."

Instead, the new policy states that children aren't allowed to expose their underwear or anything related to their private parts. This stunned parents who believed the school district was too lenient on the children.

One father, Ira Latham, decided to give them a visual example of what they were doing. During the town hall meeting regarding the dress code, he wore a black spaghetti strap top as a visual example of what the school allowed under the new dress code.

She added that by disallowing girls to show their midriffs, which was done in the previous dress code, the children were sexualized for their appearance.

Members of the faculty and parents alike were at the town hall meeting when he stripped down to show his spaghetti strap crop top and bum shorts. When he saw that people were both amused and uncomfortable with his attire, he proved his point:

"If you have a dress code policy that allows this in a classroom it does not promote a safe classroom environment as well as limits the amount of distractions in the classroom. I can't think of any place of work where I can walk in and be taken seriously in something like this."

Unfortunately, Latham's attempts to sway the board failed. There was no chance for reconsideration, and his attempts didn't sway the apparent outcome of the new dress code.

Board member Amanda Wade argued that not allowing women to dress in clothing that express themselves makes them feel bad about their body. "We're saying that they need to cover up because of the way it might make someone else feel," she explained.

Despite failing to change the school district members' minds, people commended the hands-on dad for his efforts. He posted a video of the meeting on Facebook, and fellow parents supported his stance. "Ira Latham, you should run for Higley School Board in 2024! You would have my vote!" a mom wrote.

"We are already having sexual assault in school and we already have pregnant high school students, and our public schools are already failing our kids academically. How hard is it to get kids dressed and put a book in front of them so that they can learn?" one woman added.

"If we aim to enhance our schools and the overall outcomes of our children, we must establish minimum standards of behavior," Latham, the concerned dad, concluded.
