Hollywood starlet and icon Suzanne Somers, who passed away on October 15, gave an update on the status of her health a few months before she died. The late star sat down with a media outlet to discuss her continuous on-and-off battle with cancer that predates back to when she was in her 20s.

By the time she reached her 30s, she had endured skin cancer, and by her 50s, she battled breast cancer following her diagnosis in 2000. The conversation came about because her cancer had returned before she passed away.

Despite the challenging and tireless obstacles she faced, Somers remained a valiant fighter throughout her multiple bouts with cancer. In addition to other family members and loved ones, a strong and primary source of care, love, and support she was lucky enough to have was her devoted husband, Alan Hamel, whom she had been with for over five decades:
"My cancer is a disease that affected my whole family and once it hit me in my 20s, Alan and I got even closer and every moment of every day was precious. We have not spent even one day apart in over 42 years..."
In another statement she posted on her social media account, Somers again credited Hamel for remaining by her side at every turn. When she sadly passed, an outpouring of loving tributes was shared by her family, including her beloved son and husband.

Similar to the lengthy dedication that was shared on behalf of Hamel, a day before the "Three's Company" star died, Somers' publicist told a media outlet that the doting spouse had given Somers a love letter. According to R. Couri Hay, Somers read the poem, went to sleep, and then passed peacefully. Posted to her social media feed, in all caps, some of the words read:
"Love. There is no version of the word love that is applicable to Suzanne...I weep when I think about my feelings for you...I am in love with you, my beautiful Suzanne, for all of eternity..."

Hamel went on to say that they had even thought he would actually be the first one to pass away out of the two of them, being that he is ten years older than her. However, he expressed that had that happened, it would have presented quite the challenge for the duo, as he could not ever dream of leaving his beloved on her own.

Of doing everything they could to save Somers' life and ward off the cancer, Hamel also mentioned how tricky things tend to get when dealing with a fatal illness like cancer. As he exasperated with a forlorn sigh, Hamel explained:
"Just when you think everything is fine and you get an all clear, cancer does an end-run..."

Being that she died a day before her birthday, Hay spoke about how Somers and Hamel's family all came to be with her to celebrate the legend who adored red velvet cupcakes. According to Hay:
"Her son Bruce, daughter Leslie, and daughter-in-law Caroline all arrived the day before her birthday, and all she wanted was cake—she was always happiest with a red velvet cupcake."
However, Somers was already in an extremely weakened and fragile state. Thus, her family, including her grandchildren, chose to celebrate her incredible life and legacy instead of her birthday.
