Rosalynn Carter's Sister Came to Her 3 Months before Death & Made Her Tear Up — Details
- Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter passed away earlier this week.
- Shortly before her death, she got a special visit, which brought tears to her eyes.
- The visitor revealed the details of Carter's final visit with them.
Rosalynn Carter passed away on November 19, 2023, at her home in Plains, Georgia. The 96-year-old was surrounded by her family when she breathed her last.
Before she died, she received a visit from someone close to her heart, and it was enough to reduce her to tears. Now, the visitor recalls their last visit with the former First Lady.
Carter is survived by four children, eleven grandchildren, and her sister, Lillian Smith-Wall. Carter's other siblings, brothers Murray and Jerrold, passed away twenty years ago.
How Was Carter Raised?
Carter was the oldest of her four siblings, followed by her two brothers and then Smith-Wall. Wall was named after a local nurse, and she and Carter had a special bond as the eldest and youngest siblings in the household.
The family's world was rocked when Carter's father was diagnosed with leukemia, and her mother had to become the breadwinner in their home. This meant that Carter also had to take on a different role.
As the eldest sibling, Carter stepped into a mothering role and helped raise her siblings. By the time she had turned 13 and her father had died, Carter said:
"His death marked the end of my childhood."
Carter helped raise each of her siblings and took other roles in the home, like cooking and cleaning, which helped her become accustomed to handling stress and grief well.
Carter's sister said that even though she had to take on many roles and had to do it when she was young, she never complained and only sought to achieve happiness and love in their family.
Who Visited Carter?
Although Carter faced much strife early in life, she remained close to her sister, and the pair continued their bond into adulthood. Three months before Carter passed away, her sister went to visit her.
When Carter turned 96 in August, her sister paid her a visit to mark the occasion. She remarked that she thought her older sister had outlived all of the women in their family on her 96th birthday.
Carter's sister brought a special gift, too: a photo of the former First Lady with her father. When her sister handed her the present, she said:
"That's my daddy."
She then put her hand over her heart and told her sister it was the best gift she had ever received as she teared up. Smith-Wall said she felt proud of her sister and that she loved her very much and wished her a happy 96th birthday.
Carter's family have thanked those who have sent them messages of condolence and support but have asked to be allowed to grieve privately.
