In 2017, Donovan was photographed holding hands with 19-year-old Paris Jackson. Paparazzi caught the pair enjoying a stroll with interlocked fingers in a Los Angeles neighborhood.

Donovan reportedly had a close relationship with J. F. Kennedy's niece, Kerry Kennedy, despite being 19 years her junior.

However, once the pictures of Jackson and Donovan caused a buzz, Michael Jackson's daughter defended her and the actor's actions in a since-deleted tweet and said holding hands was common.

In 2022, Donovan's representative confirmed the actor did not have a wife after revealing in a statement that the "Love, Fall & Order" star was newly single and enjoyed a sense of privacy whenever he was in relationships. Donovan's representative shared:

"Trevor is recently single. When he's in a relationship, he tries his best to keep it out of the spotlight out of respect for the person he's dating."

During an interview, the pair revealed they had "really connected" during their time as dance partners, and Donovan said he and Slater had gotten "100 percent comfortable with each other."

Donovan reportedly had a close relationship with J. F. Kennedy's niece, Kerry Kennedy, despite being 19 years her junior. One of Kennedy's family members said she and Donovan had been "tight" for years and used to travel the world together.
