A Former U.S. First Lady's Coat Worn for the Late Rosalynn Carter's Funeral Caused Heated Backlash from the Public
All U.S. political figures and alums who attended Rosalynn's tribute service were dressed in black. Obama sported a black turtleneck, a black blazer, and black pants; Bush wore a black dress that had 3/4 sleeves, and Hillary opted for an oversized black button-down sweater coat and black pants.
Trump, however, chose to break the dress code and wore a different color than black, which is the usual color expected for such events.

The blue-eyed former U.S. first lady decided to wear a gray tweed coat, cinched at the waist with a belt. Her coat ended mid-calf, leaving her bare legs exposed. She paired off her look by wearing her hair in loose, light curls, and wore black leather gloves.

When the public saw pictures of Trump, many thought her outfit was tasteless and inappropriate in light of the event she was attending. Users strongly felt that she should have been wearing black:
"Melania can't wear black?? How disrespectful."

Others even began to question whether or not Trump had a black coat at all as a way of trying to understand her not following the all-black protocol. Another user even stated that she thought Obama and Bush's expressions in some pictures showed that they, too, might have thought the tweed coat was unsuitable for the service. One user commented:
"Black was obviously requested — they all were wearing black but her..."

Even though most comments criticized Trump for not wearing black, some defended her and highlighted that the comments were unnecessary.
