Somers had a long history of health ailments and had battled cancer for a significant part of her life. Her cancer had returned in July, but according to her devoted and loving husband, Alan Hamel, 87, Somers had been doing better just three days before her death after having spent six weeks with medical specialists in Chicago.

However, things worsened a couple of days after she returned home from Chicago. Somers stopped eating, responding, and taking her medication. Respecting his wife's wish of not wanting to go to a hospital, Hamel stayed by Somers' side during her final days. He said:

"I talked to her for hours, every night, and I assumed she could hear me because her lips responded..."

Hamel also wrote a heartwarming poem for his beloved late wife that she read on the day before she passed. The beautiful words boasted about his unwavering and enduring love for her and mentioned how the couple never spent as much as an hour apart. A part of the message, written in all caps, read:

"We are one. I am in love with you, my beautiful Suzanne, for all of eternity."

Far from growing tired of each other as the years went on, Hamel and Somers' relationship grew stronger, and they fell deeper in love with each other as time passed. Another thing that never fizzled was their burning desire for one another, as Somers previously revealed taking melanocortin-based peptide shots to keep their intimate life alive.

With the love of his life gone, Hamel, his kids, Somers' son, and their grandchildren survive their dearly missed matriarch. Of losing his beloved wife, Hamel expressed:

"...we had talked about this day coming, and we thought it was going to be me because I'm 10 years older. If that happened she would be alone, which was a terrible conundrum, the idea of her being alone."

The notes on the shoes spoke to the couple's unconditional and immortal love and included an inside reference alluding to the duo's active love life: "in love forever" and "twice a day." The designer boots also had red and pink Picasso-esque drawings of a man and woman and squiggly shapes.

Concerning why Somers was buried in the one-of-a-kind shoes, Hamel recalled how he initially purchased the boots for Somers because of their shared love of hiking. He then decided to kit the boots out with unique drawings and notes to personalize them for her and represent their life together. According to Hamel, Somers being buried in her Timbalands was because:

"Every time she put on the Timbalands, she said, 'I am wearing you, and my boots will keep me safe.'"

"I was half asleep when I had a vision that she was in bed with me and turned around and looked right at me—I could feel her presence, I felt she was there...I feel in someway she was visiting me."
