David Beckham and his wife, Victoria Beckham, have been married for 24 years. The couple share four kids, Brooklyn, 24, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 18, and Harper, 12. The pair have had a successful marriage, but one that isn't devoid of challenges.
Despite the hardships, David and Victoria have stood by one another. Victoria, a former member of the Spice Girls, met her husband when he was still an active English footballer and was playing with Manchester United.
In the Netflix documentary "Beckham," David revealed that the then Manchester United coach, Sir Alex Ferguson, did not like his girlfriend, Victoria, and was against their relationship. He explained that Sir Alex wanted him to be the best footballer and marry a local girl, not a star like Victoria.
After David and Victoria's relationship became public, the media was in a frenzy, tagging the couple as "Posh and Becks," reminiscent of Victoria's Spice Girl monicker, Posh Spice. At the same time, the former footballer was also getting lucrative sponsorship deals from partners such as Adidas. David believes that this increased publicity didn't change him.
However, Sir Alex pointed out that David changed. "Media attention he was getting and becoming a celebrity was different from what I wanted," he admitted. The former coach found it harder to keep David focused on football. The former footballer also wanted to have a career outside football, which would sustain him once he retired, but Sir Alex couldn't understand this.
Sir Alex blamed Victoria for David's change. He said in his memoir "Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography" that David was swallowed up by the media and publicity agents as a celebrity, making him lose a chance to be an "absolute top player." He added that the designer was part of the influences that changed David:
"The big problem for me ... he fell in love with Victoria and that changed everything."
However, Victoria was in love with David and would do nothing to sabotage his career. In "Beckham," she revealed that the only thing she wanted to do was to support David in everything he does:
"I love watching him play football, but then I love whatever he does. He could be painting a wall, and I'd love watching him painting a wall."
Even with Sir Alex being against the love between David and Victoria, the couple was not deterred. They got engaged in 1998 and wed in 1999, shortly after welcoming their first child, Brooklyn. Victoria learned that she was pregnant with Brooklyn just before a big storm hit David's career and impacted his personal life.
Victoria told David she was pregnant with Brooklyn the night before the 1998 World Cup match between England and Argentina. England and Argentina have had a football rivalry for decades, and when David entered this game, he had just learned he was going to be a father. This match ended up being infamous.
When England played Argentina in round 16, in the end, the score was two-two, and the football game had to go to penalties. Unfortunately, David was out on a red card, which he received for kicking an opposing player, Diego Simeone.
England was neck-in-neck, scoring ten against Argentina's 11. Things got worse when Argentina won the penalty shoot-out four-three, which led to the elimination of England from the competition.
England football fans blamed David for their loss and being kicked out of the World Cup. David acknowledged that he made a "stupid mistake" that changed his life. He also noted that eventually, "the whole country hated me," as everywhere he went, he would be abused. People spat at him and came up to his face, calling harsh things such as "stupid" and "childish."
Victoria had never really been into football as much as she supported David, so she didn't really understand what had happened during the World Cup and why everyone was angry. However, she saw how David wasn't eating or sleeping because he felt like he had let himself, his fans, his teammates, and his country down.

David's friend David Gardner recalled how people would spit at the former footballer as he walked along the street, barge into him, wind his car window down, and bang on his car and the windows, but he never reacted. David's friends had to take turns escorting him to the toilet due to the endless harassment.

The pain of being subjected to this abuse was so difficult for David that he became broken, was in pieces, and was a mess. "He was really depressed. Absolutely, clinically depressed," Victoria divulged. During all these traumatizing events, Victoria admitted to being "so pregnant" and "so tired."
The couple's situation got worse when David's family was also harassed, and he received death threats. Outside one pub in England, a person put David's dummy with an England shirt on and a noose around, which was only removed after the police intervened.

After Brooklyn was born, David and Victoria started receiving kidnapping threats. David couldn't sleep at night as he kept wondering how he would protect his son. At times, he would sleep with his head against the door as Brooklyn slept next to Victoria.

Victoria wasn't spared the angry wrath. During football matches, the designer would come with Brooklyn to support David, but fans started singing obscenities, which the couple said were hurtful and embarrassing. However, all these fans did was spur David on. He recalled:
"When fans thought they could get to me by singing songs about my family, I ended up scoring a goal."

David ended a long goal drought and was still a phenomenal footballer even after his fans turned against him, and he went through a challenging time mentally and physically. To date, he remains one of the most talented and respected football players of all time.
Before he retired, David won six Premier League titles, The Ligue title (France), two FA cups, four Community Shields, La Liga (Spain), two MLS Cups (USA), and a Champions League title. David is also a wealthy man with a net worth of approximately $47 million.
David and Victoria have weathered the storms that threatened to wreck their marriage and tarnish their love. The duo is a power couple who are raising their kids as they continue pursuing their passions in football and fashion.
