A TikToker with the username @hey_shannonrae shared the harrowing story of how her mother-in-law ruined her wedding day. A series of events continually irritated her, but she decided to ignore them for the sake of the wedding. Each incident was worse than the last, making her wedding day one of the most stressful days.

Shannon explained that the wedding took place at the peak of COVID-19. She had planned to have the big day in April 2020, but due to strict protocols, she had to disinvite a few people to ensure everyone's safety.

During the planning process, Shannon had a gut feeling about canceling the wedding but felt pressured to continue. It didn't help that her mother-in-law (MIL) was quite critical of her choices. The bride had chosen black dresses for her bridesmaids, but the MIL expressed her dislike for the color.
The TikToker and her husband had chosen an equal number of people for their bridal party, including bridesmaids, best men, the maid of honor, and flower girls, but the MIL wanted to add more people to the group.

On the wedding day, Shannon saw a little girl who wasn't part of the wedding wearing a differently colored dress from the one she had chosen. However, she decided not to make a big deal out of it because the child likely didn't understand the situation.
After the wedding ceremony, everyone proceeded to the reception. The bride and groom had their first dance, and Shannon had her father-daughter dance, which was very special to her. They danced to Stevie Wonder's hit song, "Isn't She Lovely."

Next, it was time for the groom and his mother to dance. Shannon explained that her husband didn't know how to dance, so she suggested they choose a very slow song. However, as they took to the dance floor, the MIL broke into a dance routine that didn't match the rhythm of the song.
She even asked the DJ to change the song, and they also danced to "Isn't She Lovely." The bride found the ordeal unnecessary because her MIL made the dance about herself and didn't consider how uncomfortable it would make her shy son.

After surviving yet another incident, it was time for speeches. The groom's friend said a few words, and the groom made a short speech, thanking everyone for celebrating with them and thanking his in-laws for their financial contribution to the wedding.
However, more drama unfolded. Right after the speeches, the MIL stood up and began shouting in front of everyone at the reception, telling the bride and groom that she was done with them and that she would be blocking them on all platforms.

Everyone was confused because the exchange had been quite sweet, but the MIL was angry because she didn't receive a special thank-you speech dedicated to her. Shannon explained that her husband simply wanted to thank her parents for their financial contribution and those in attendance.
His speech wasn't prepared, so it was understandable that he might forget a few things. However, the bride and groom had already set aside special gifts for their parents as a token of appreciation. But that was not the end of it, on her way out, the MIL asked the bride for her bouquet. The request had left her speechless.

It was shocking that her MIL had caused a scene, left the reception early, and made their big day about herself, without any consideration of how much stress and emotional turmoil she had caused the couple. But as Shannon was telling the story, commenters noticed she referred to her husband as her ex, prompting questions about whether the marriage lasted.

Shannon confirmed that they did not make it and ended the marriage about a year into it. Her mother-in-law tried to reach out but never really apologized. But Shannon didn't have to worry about the future of their relationship because she and her husband didn't end up together.

The story stirred up the comment section, with many people saying the MIL didn't understand boundaries. "The real issue was the entire wedding should have been about her, and it wasn't. She was insecure and jealous," remarked a viewer. Another added, "Narcissistic mother. Narcissistic family."

Shannon's memories of her special day will forever be tinged with the discomfort and drama instigated by her mother-in-law's actions. But as she reflected on her wedding, she realized that there were signs of the eventual demise of her marriage. However, she came out of the experience, without any bitterness, but with the knowledge that she could endure and overcome significant challenges.
