It was an intense and debilitating condition called misophonia. Though she lit up screens with her portrayal of the beloved frontier girl, behind the scenes, was a different story.

Every day sounds like chewing, gum popping, and even the innocent clap of hands sent her into frustration. As a young girl, Gilbert says these sounds became unbearable triggers that provoked a deep emotional reaction.

"If any of the kids chewed gum or ate or tapped their fingernails on the table, I would want to run away so badly," she recalled in a recent interview. The actress shared that her reaction to these noises left her feeling trapped in anger and misery.

She would turn beet-red, eyes brimming with tears of frustration. And yet, she felt guilty—how could she feel so much rage towards people including her own loved ones?

Even her family didn't quite understand. They chalked it up to her being a fussy kid, unaware of the internal storm she was weathering. "I would just glare at my parents and my grandmother and my siblings with eyes filled with hate," she confessed.

The condition followed her into motherhood, where her own children faced the effects of her misophonia. "My poor kids spent their whole childhoods growing up with me doing this. They weren't allowed to have gum," she admitted.

It wasn't until much later that Gilbert would finally find an answer to the suffering she had endured for so long. She learned that her intense reactions to certain sounds were rooted in a neurological disorder—misophonia.

But as she reached menopause, the condition only worsened. She grew more sensitive, her emotional responses more intense, leading to outbursts that she couldn't control. "I was more touchy," she explained.

Gilbert's turning point came when she reached out to Dr. Zach Rosenthal at the Duke Center for Misophonia & Emotion Regulation. Finally, she had a diagnosis—and a path toward understanding and treatment.

Donning a loose dress adorned with floral details, white gloves, and a fuchsia scarf elegantly placed around her neck, Gilbert smiled at the camera. A silver tiara-like headband swept her hair from her face, adding a touch of whimsy to the moment.

Despite the challenges she's faced, Gilbert has come to realize that time and age bring new perspectives. More than a decade ago, when competing on "Dancing with the Stars," she was consumed by the "need to stay young."

One of her proudest moments was when she slimmed down enough to fit into a costume worn by pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd, who's over 20 years younger. "I was so excited," she recalled.

Now, looking back, Gilbert reflects on that younger, age-obsessed version of herself. "It's an odd thing to be proud of," she said. Today, she is most proud of learning how to quilt and admits that's how life changes when a person approaches 60.

Gilbert has embraced this new chapter, even launching her own lifestyle brand for older women called Modern Prairie. She no longer longs for her youth. "Aging is not a disease. It's time we celebrate it," she declares. In fact, she feels lucky that she gets to grow old.

Though her career is still thriving, Hollywood's pressures once led her to make choices she regrets, including cosmetic procedures. Gilbert admits she was deeply insecure.

But everything shifted when she met her husband, Timothy Busfield. From the start of their relationship, menopause became part of their marriage. However, she credits Busfield for his unwavering support.

When asked how she sees herself now, Gilbert reflected on the key to staying youthful. She believes curiosity is what keeps us open, vibrant, and forever learning. For Gilbert, that's the secret to staying young at heart.

She also believes in learning from others, no matter the situation. "I never want to be the smartest person in the room," she admits. In her eyes, it's the people who think they know everything who seem old and stagnant. Aging may be inevitable, but stodginess is something Gilbert refuses to let define her.
