What was meant to be a fun classroom activity quickly sparked a heated online debate about technology and childhood. Now, one parent is pushing for answers and hoping her story leads to real change.

Nikki Anderson has taken to social media to voice her concerns after her six-year-old daughter's school created an AI-generated image of the little girl as a 25-year-old adult.

According to Anderson, her daughter, Harper, brought the picture home from school on Friday afternoon, October 16.

The photo showed Harper dressed as a nurse, the career she hopes to pursue when she grows up. Alongside the AI image, Harper also brought home a construction paper drawing depicting her future.

The following day, Anderson turned to Instagram to share what had happened. "My 6yo came home from public school with an AI generated photo of herself at 25," she began in a post featuring a carousel of her daughter's drawings, overlaid with her thoughts in white text.

She continued, "She is a small human who is literally capable of imagining an entire independent future inside her own head. I cannot get over how cool that is. My child is brilliant. Your children are [expletive] brilliant."

"[...] They're going to spend the next twelve years being measured, ranked, standardized, and gradually molded into whatever our economy has decided makes a person useful. Can we at least leave their imaginations alone?" Anderson wrote.

"Why do adults feel the need to insert a multibillion dollar industry into something children already do better than us?" she wondered. "To what? Make it more impressive? More marketable? More worth looking at? I don't think the children are the ones who need help imagining a future."

Speaking with People after her post went viral, Anderson revealed she was immediately taken aback when she first laid eyes on the AI picture.

"My initial reaction was — Am I allowed to be grossed out about this? I am grossed out about this," she said. "Did a teacher really upload my daughter's photo somewhere to make this, knowing what we know about AI?"

"I was honestly in disbelief," she admitted. Although Anderson wanted to ask Harper more about her drawing, the little girl was far more interested in the AI photo.

According to Anderson, Harper adored the picture because it showed her with the straight, wavy hair she'd always wanted.

The youngster hoped to grow up just as beautiful, though she understood the image was only a guess at what she might look like. "I won't look like that…I hope I do," Harper said, according to Anderson.

Beyond her initial shock, Anderson also raised concerns about privacy, how schools are using AI, and whether parents are consenting to the use of these systems.

"I think the initial concern was ultimately the privacy implications. What software was used? Was it an outside platform? What happens to those pictures after? Did any of us actually consent to that?" she said. "Those are questions I think every parent deserves answers to."

"Children cannot meaningfully consent to this sort of use; I think our children deserve protection, not only of their image, but of their minds," Anderson added.

The mom of two wasted no time taking these questions to her school's administration and requesting clarification on the project.

She says she's still awaiting responses from the principal and school board members, but she hopes the conversation can help to "develop meaningful safeguards" around AI.

"I want a meaningful step forward to prevent this from happening. I don't want this to become a story about attacking educators," she explained.

"Teachers are already being asked to do an extraordinary amount with limited resources, and I don't think the responsibility for navigating an entirely new tech landscape should fall exclusively on them."

Aside from her privacy concerns, Anderson says she fears "our priorities aren't quite right."

"6-year-olds are already creative. They're already innovative. They're already capable of imagining futures that adults couldn't possibly predict. Why are we outsourcing that?" she asked.

"Harper is 6, and she's at that incredible age where the world is still full of possibilities. She doesn't need a computer to tell her what she could become."
