Hackman developed a passion for writing and authored several historical fiction novels. He also stayed active, often seen cycling in the desert landscape around Santa Fe. In 2018, he was spotted riding an e-bike, showing that he remained engaged in outdoor activities well into his late 80s.

Others expressed similar shock, with one remarking, "I would never have known that was Gene Hackman." Hackman's Passing and Investigation

On February 26, 2025, Hackman and his wife, Arakawa, were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their dog was also found deceased. Authorities arrived at the residence in the gated Santa Fe Summit community that afternoon to investigate.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their deaths but stated that there were no immediate signs of foul play. It was unclear whether deputies were responding to a welfare check or a report of the deaths.

"All I can say is that we're in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant," Mendoza said.

The sheriff assured the public that there was "no immediate danger to anyone" in the community. However, the official cause of death has not yet been released, and further investigation is pending.
