The retired actor has stepped out of the spotlight so completely that his latest appearance has left some fans asking the same stunned question: Is that really him?

David Caruso, now 70, appeared in a recent rare public sighting that quickly got people talking — not because of a comeback role or red-carpet moment, but because of his dramatically different, off-duty look.

Caruso, who has long been associated with sharp suits, intense stares, and his unforgettable TV detective persona, looked far removed from the polished image many viewers remember.

In new photos, he is seen wearing a casual gray T-shirt, loose sweatpants, dark sunglasses, and a hat while out in a leafy outdoor area. The sighting immediately stirred conversation online, with some people shocked by the change and others rushing to defend the retired actor.

One Facebook user chastized, "It's disgraceful how we age sheme people. The guy is 70 and retired. It's not unusual to gain weight or have aging looks so no big deal [sic]."

Another commenter seemed to see something softer in the photos, writing, "Look like a happy man, no worries about next movies offer [sic]."

That reaction captured the split perfectly: while some people are surprised by Caruso's latest appearance, others feel the retired star looks like someone who has simply stepped away from Hollywood pressure.

David Caruso looks pensive in a dark jacket and pale blue shirt while appearing in the 1981 ABC TV movie "Crazy Times," an early screen role that captured him with a serious, youthful gaze.

On another Facebook post, a viewer commented, "Whoa that's David Caruso oh my wow, well he is 70 and he's aloud to age lol, at least he doesn't look like a plastic duck 😉 [sic]." A fellow observer added, "Now he looks like a regular person..."

But not everyone was so calm about the transformation… One person marveled, "Noway?! Looks like a total different person [sic]." Someone else echoed, "No way! It can't be him!" Yet another netizen reiterated the disbelief, declaring, "No way thats [sic] him."

Meanwhile, a different observer took a warmer view of Caruso's quieter chapter, defending, "Good for him. I bet his life is much more peaceful."

And honestly, that may be the whole story behind the photos: a man who once lived under the glare of fame now living life on his own terms.

According to a 2024 Daily Mail report, after leaving acting, Caruso briefly opened an art gallery in Westlake Village, a suburb of Los Angeles. However, the gallery has since closed, and Caruso has reportedly been living off the $35 million fortune he amassed during his acting career.

He also reportedly opened a clothing store in Miami, another sign that his life after acting did not simply stop — it just moved far away from the cameras. Still, Caruso has apparently not completely erased his Hollywood past.

The same report stated that although he no longer acts, a source said he has framed photos of himself in character inside his house. The insider claimed, "He has a photo of himself from his time on 'CSI Miami' and another from 'Proof of Life' – two of his biggest hits. Both are hung up in his garage."

That little detail adds a surprisingly sentimental twist to the story. Caruso may be retired from acting, but the roles that made him famous seem to still have a place in his private world. His acting journey was not without bumps, either.

The Daily Mail noted that two of his early film appearances, in the 1995 thrillers "Kiss of Death" and "Jade," earned him the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star.

But Caruso moved past that setback and later appeared alongside Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan in 2000's "Proof of Life." Of course, his biggest mark came on television.

He became best known for his TV cop roles, including his short-lived but acclaimed turn on "NYPD Blue," which earned him a Golden Globe in 1994 for Best Actor in a TV Drama Series. He was also nominated for an Emmy for the same role.

Caruso's time on "NYPD Blue," however, came with behind-the-scenes drama that has followed his career for years. In a Hollywood Reporter excerpt from Steven Bochco's memoir, Bochco wrote, "Caruso's behavior was, simply put, cancerous."

According to Bochco, he had been dealing with two realities in opposition to each other, with one being the fact that "NYPD Blue" was a major success, and the other being, as he put it, "David Caruso had become impossible."

Bochco said that Caruso had almost daily clashes with Writer David Milch, who had been experiencing "serious heart issues," adding, "Every time I'd call Caruso into my office for a conversation about his problems, he'd shut down like a sullen teenager."

In the excerpt, Bochco continued, "He was emotionally unavailable to everyone, and he was volatile, moody or sullen, depending on the day. Most people don't function well in a dysfunctional environment, but Caruso loved it because he was the source of all the discontent, and it empowered him."

It is a striking contrast to the latest reaction around him. Back then, Caruso was being discussed as a difficult rising star at the center of a hit show; now, people are debating whether a retired 70-year-old should be judged for looking older.

Away from the silver screen, the Daily Mail also reported that Caruso has had an interesting personal life, including three divorces.

But these days, the conversation around him feels less about scandal and more about recognition — or the shock of not recognizing him at all.

His latest appearance seems to have reminded fans how much time has passed since his biggest TV years. Some saw a drastically changed man, some saw a peaceful retiree, and others saw a celebrity being unfairly judged for doing what every person does: aging.

Still, the fascination is understandable. For many viewers, Caruso remains frozen in memory as the cool, controlled screen presence from his prime. That is why the new images have caused such a stir — they show not a Hollywood character, but a private man moving through an ordinary day. And after years away from acting, that may be the most surprising image of all.

Below, take a look at a gallery showing David Caruso through the years, tracing his evolution from his TV fame and Hollywood roles to the rare new appearance that has everyone talking.
