A Childhood Rooted in Dance and Early Ambition

The actress was raised in a Houston dance studio managed by her mother. The dance school environment made her believe that dancing would shape her future. She made her television debut at the age of two on "The Don Mahoney Kiddie Trooper Show."

By the age of 13, she was already studying dance when someone suggested she also try acting classes. The actress and her mother went to Los Angeles for a year to figure out if she could make a career in show business.

Before two months had passed by, she got her first professional job, which involved her dancing with Danny Kaye on "The Danny Kaye Show." Her first acting role came soon after in "My Three Sons."

Even so, the idea of acting did not appeal to her, and early classes failed to spark any real interest. That changed when she attended sessions led by actor Robert Ellenstein. His teaching style and approach to the craft left a strong impression, and she quickly realised that acting was what she wanted to pursue.

As she approached 18, she found herself at a crossroads after landing opportunities in both a major dance production and an acting role in an episode of "Gunsmoke." With the schedules clashing, she was forced to choose and ultimately decided to take the acting role, setting her on a different path.

Her film career began in 1975 when she appeared as a Young American Miss contestant in Michael Ritchie's "Smile." She went on to build a strong screen presence, with roles in films such as "48 Hrs.," "Cat People," and "Superman III," where she portrayed Lana Lang.

Despite her success in both film and television, her greatest passion has remained the stage. After her six-year run on "Smallville" came to an end, she chose to shift her focus toward theatre. The actress has continued to prioritise theatre over the past decade, while still taking on occasional roles in television and film.

Heartbreak and Loss Along the Way

The actress also opened up about her parents and childhood. She grew up as an only child, born after her parents had struggled for several years to have children. They had even begun the process of adoption before her mother unexpectedly became pregnant.

The news came as a joyful surprise, especially as her mother had long hoped for a daughter and got that wish was fulfilled. Decades later, her mother continued to teach tap dancing until she sadly passed on in January 2025.

Her father, a mechanical engineer, remained a steady source of support throughout her life, encouraging her to follow her passion for the arts. His death in 2016 came while she was performing in a play in Edinburgh, Scotland. Despite the shock and grief, she chose to complete the production before returning home for his burial.

She was Lana Lang in Superman 3 and then, of course, was Clark's mom on Smallville. She's married to actor Musician Michael McKean in real life [sic]."

A Love Story Decades in the Making

After her divorce from her first husband, Bill Geisslinger, Annette went on to form a relationship with Michael McKean, whom she later married. The two had first met in the 1970s while Michael was working on "Laverne & Shirley."

At the time, he was already in a relationship, and their connection remained platonic. Michael went on to marry Susan Russell from 1970 to 1993, and the couple had two sons, Colin and Fletcher. Sadly, their eldest, Colin, died in 2012 at the age of 36 from an accidental overdose.

Years later, Michael and Annette reconnected while working together on the 1998 Lifetime film "Final Justice" in Portland, Oregon, where their relationship turned romantic. Initially, Annette was not interested in remarrying, as her focus was on raising her daughters.

Outside of her career, Annette has also focused on raising remarkable daughters. Both Nell and Anna Geisslinger attended Crossroads School in Santa Monica, California, with Nell graduating in 2001.

Nell later enrolled at Bennington College in Vermont but left after one term. In 2002, she joined the acting company at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as an intern.

She has since taken part in musical and variety performances with her mother and stepfather, contributing on piano and guitar while also providing backing vocals.
