As questions swirl around his royal ties, Prince Harry made a solo return to the U.K., marking a solemn anniversary and reconnecting with a familiar cause.

No wife. No children. No family waiting to greet him. Prince Harry touched down in the U.K. under a cloud of royal silence and headed straight for one place: his grandmother's grave.

On Sunday, September 8, the Duke of Sussex made a private, unannounced visit to St. George's Chapel in Windsor to pay his respects on the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death. With no royal reunion on the schedule and no Meghan by his side, Harry's visit was a lone mission of remembrance.

A spokesperson confirmed the Duke laid a wreath of flowers in silence at the Queen's final resting place, a solemn tribute to the woman who adored him, and who once held together a family now more fractured than ever.

Grave Visit Marks Painful Return to Royal Ground

Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96. After her historic state funeral, she was privately buried on September 19 in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, the final resting place she now shares with Prince Philip, her parents, and her sister, Princess Margaret.

The Queen’s death remains a defining moment for the royal family and for Harry personally. St. George's Chapel also holds personal meaning: it's where he and Meghan Markle were married in May 2018. He made a similar graveside visit in 2023.

This year, his return to Windsor marked the first stop on a four-day solo trip to the U.K.

No Wife or Children, And No Royal Reunion on the Books

The Duke, who has lived in California since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, arrived in the U.K. on the morning of September 8, alone. Meghan, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, remained in the U.S.

His first public appearance will be at the 20th annual WellChild Awards in London, a cause Harry has supported for 17 years. There, he is expected to meet young award recipients and their families, present the Award for Inspirational Child (aged 4–6), and deliver a speech during the ceremony.

The WellChild Awards honor seriously ill children across the U.K. and recognize the families and professionals who support them.

Echoes of 2022 and a Family Harry Hasn't Seen Since February

In a twist of timing, Harry and Meghan were also in the U.K. for the 2022 WellChild Awards when doctors raised "concerns" about the Queen's health. Harry traveled to Scotland, and the couple remained in Britain to attend the funeral.

This year's visit is slightly longer than some of his previous stays, sparking speculation over whether Harry might finally reunite with King Charles III.

The father and son have not seen each other in person since February 2024, shortly after the King disclosed he was undergoing cancer treatment.

Harry returned again in May 2024 for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, and in September 2024 for the WellChild Awards, but no meeting took place on either occasion.

'Made No Secret' of Wanting Reunion, but William Remains Out of Reach

According to NBC News royal contributor Emily Nash, Harry "has made no secret of the fact that he would love to be reunited with his family and his father in particular." She added, "Now, we think that could be a possibility."

However, she cautioned that relations between Harry and Prince William remain "incredibly strained," noting there has been no direct contact between the brothers, and making any reunion unlikely.

Security Still a Sticking Point And a Legal Blow That Still Stings

One issue has remained a constant obstacle: security.

In May 2025, Harry lost a legal appeal to have his publicly funded security reinstated while in the U.K.

In a candid BBC interview, Harry did not hold back. He revealed the decision left him devastated and convinced him that it was a classic establishment stitch-up. "I can't see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point," he stated.

A source close to the Duke told Hello! that Harry has always wanted to share his home country with his children, but won't expose them to what he sees as unresolved risks. The source said, "This is, I am sure, a sentiment many could relate to."

'Life Is Precious,' but Is Reconciliation Even Possible?

Despite the legal defeats and strained ties, Harry doesn't want to continue the conflict any longer.

"I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point continuing to fight anymore, life is precious," he said. He acknowledged there had been "many disagreements," but added that he had "forgiven" his relatives.
