A Love That Changed Music – and Them

With D'Angelo's death coming just months after Angie's passing, some of her past interviews have resurfaced, one where she spoke of how they first crossed paths.

D'Angelo and Angie first met through Jocelyn Cooper, who was in the process of signing them both as songwriters. Angie recalled being in the studio when D'Angelo walked in. She made it clear that he was the one who pursued her, not the other way around.

Initially, she assumed he was older because of his mature demeanor and what she described as his "old soul" energy.

The two connected instantly through music, and their creative chemistry soon grew into a deep friendship. D'Angelo later decided to stay in New York instead of returning to Virginia, telling her that he finally had someone he could relate to.

What began as a close friendship eventually blossomed into romance. However, as their relationship evolved, Angie said that public perception shifted.

Over time, she felt the world turned against her because of her connection to D'Angelo. Despite the criticism, Angie chose to endure it and keep moving forward.

The singer also addressed the criticism surrounding the age gap in their relationship. Angie revealed that the judgment only began after D'Angelo found fame.

Before his success, she was already an established artist with Vertical Hold and had been dating him when he was an unknown 19-year-old. At the time, he wore glasses, kept his hair short, and often dressed in oversized clothes — traits that drew little attention.

She Saw the Star Before the World Did

Angie recalled recognizing his potential long before anyone else did. "I knew a superstar was on the rise," she said, adding, "there was an innocence there that if we weren't careful was going to get trashed."

She continued, "It's not a little bit of God in him. It's a lot of God in him. Sometimes when you have that much power, Satan works tenfold to break you."

The singer divulged that she told D'Angelo that one day his looks would be celebrated. She helped shape his early image by braiding his hair with thread for the "Brown Sugar" album cover, as he had not yet developed a public persona.

"It wasn't until 'Brown Sugar' came out that people actually took a good look at him and said, 'You know what? He's fine.' Then all of a sudden, he's so fine he shouldn't be with me," recalled Angie.

A Deep Spiritual Bond That Never Broke

When she was asked if she and D'Angelo would ever collaborate again, Angie admitted she believed deep down that he would have loved to work with her once more. However, she felt his pride and the constant misunderstandings surrounding him might have prevented that from happening.

He had once told her that he didn't want people to assume he couldn't make an album without her, a sentiment she said she respected. For years, their names had been closely linked, something she attributed more to their deep spiritual bond than professional dependency.

Angie noted, "We work extremely well together, but I have a respect for him as a musician, as a Black man because I understand the pressure of the will to do greatness with the odds against you and your spirit has been broken."

When asked about the state of their relationship, Angie explained, "D'angelo and I are parents first. For the sake of my son, I would never disrespect his father." She characterized their bond as one shaped by love and conflict.

However, Angie emphasized that they were simply two Southern people who loved their craft, their faith, and tried to navigate life despite its challenges. "There are times that we are silent and there are times that we laugh. He'll always have a special place in my heart," she declared.

Angie was also asked whether it was difficult to let go of the intimate part of her relationship with D'Angelo. She admitted that while she could have turned to D'Angelo for support, she chose not to.

She explained that moving forward required letting go of that aspect of their bond, though it was challenging because they remained connected through their son. Their communication, she said, continued for his sake.

However, whenever they crossed paths, there was still an unspoken question lingering between them — a quiet wonder of how things had come to that point.

Possession, Jealousy, and Pain Behind Closed Doors

Angie also addressed the question of whether public criticism about her and D'Angelo being mismatched affected their relationship. She was clear that it hadn't. She said their relationship simply didn't work out, and D'Angelo eventually moved on, having a daughter with another woman.

She emphasized that his new relationship didn't diminish her in any way, expressing pride in who she was both inside and out. Her confidence, Angie explained, came from her inner strength and character, which she believed would outshine anyone else.

For her, self-assurance wasn't rooted in appearance but in knowing her worth, and she was unbothered by comparisons or public opinion.

Angie was also asked whether she had to put in more effort once D'Angelo became a superstar. She admitted, "D’Angelo is very possessive of the women he loves and had a major jealous streak. Even now, it's still major and we haven't been together for ten years."

During his rise to fame, she said she was careful not to give him any reason to be suspicious. His control over their relationship was so intense that, as she recalled, she wouldn't even turn her head while they were driving together because "he didn't play that."

She Was Always There for Him – Even When They Were Apart

As for whether she went to his side after his legal troubles, Angie explained that her concern was rooted in motherhood.

"I have a son with him, so when he got into a car accident that affects my child because my son adores his father. So if he's in trouble I'm going to do what I need to do as a woman for my son because I would be less than a mother if I didn't," she noted.

Angie Stone said she would always be there to offer D'Angelo moral support or whatever help he might need. She added that if their roles were reversed, she would expect him to do the same for her.

Still, she noted that she didn't abandon all her commitments, but she made time to understand the situation firsthand so her child wouldn't be influenced by rumors. Doing so, she added, allowed her to fulfill her role as a mother and provide stability for her son.
