For over 20 years, the actor has portrayed the steady Dr. Richard Webber on "Grey's Anatomy." Earlier this year, he faced a personal health crisis that eerily mirrored his character's own journey.

In early 2025, James Pickens Jr. learned he had prostate cancer, a revelation he discussed candidly with Black Health Matters. For him, the diagnosis came as a sobering but not entirely surprising reality.

"It's not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family. My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn't gotten it," Pickens said.

He went on to reflect on the generational thread of the disease, "I've got a 90-year-old first cousin, who's still alive, actually; he had it. His son has it. A couple of his brothers had it. No one, as far as I know, has succumbed to it."

From Scripted Medicine to Real-Life Diagnosis

Though Pickens has spent years immersed in TV's world of high-stakes surgeries and diagnoses, the reality of his own medical journey was sobering. During a routine physical examination in 2024, doctors noted an increase in his PSA levels. By January this year, follow-up tests showed a further increase.

His primary doctor referred him to a urologist, whose words would change everything. The "Grey's Anatomy" actor recalled:

"The urologist looked at him and said, 'Yeah, there's something here. Let's do an MRI,' which we did, and it revealed, as he called it, something suspicious."

Tests soon confirmed the presence of a tumor, and imaging revealed that the cancer was localized to a single section of the prostate. After weighing his options, Pickens underwent a radical prostatectomy — a robotic surgery performed by two urologists. He was discharged from the hospital the next day.

Speaking Out to Save Lives

Since recovering, Pickens has spotlighted the importance of early detection, particularly among Black men, who face higher rates of prostate cancer. In a video shared to the Black Health Matters Instagram page on November 14, 2025, Pickens issued a heartfelt plea:

"One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. For black men, the risk is even higher. Fortunately, prostate cancer is highly treatable, but early detection is the key. And sometimes, there are no noticeable symptoms."

He added that he has long partnered with the organization to promote preventive care and early detection for men, encouraging them to prioritize regular screenings, starting with a simple blood test.

He continued, "Today, I'm living proof that early detection works. If you're black or prostate cancer runs in your family, talk to your doctor about getting screened starting at age 40."

Life Imitates Art in Emotional Episode

In an unusual but striking coincidence, Pickens' real-life diagnosis coincided with a storyline on the medical series's most recent episode, in which his character, Dr. Webber, is confronted with prostate cancer. On the show, Webber discovers his condition while working to save a critically injured patient named Glen.

The episode mirrors Pickens' own emotional balancing act — managing a life-altering diagnosis while continuing to lead and support others. It underscores the powerful, sometimes eerie, parallels between fiction and reality.

Confronting Cultural Stigmas Around Health

Beyond awareness, Pickens is determined to challenge the silence and stigma surrounding men's health — particularly in the African American community.

He spoke openly about how long-standing mistrust of the healthcare system and cultural hesitations around vulnerability have kept many men from seeking care.

His openness, he hopes, will shift that narrative. Pickens' story is more than a personal update — it's a call to action for vigilance, courage, and the power of speaking up.
