She has spent years guiding strangers through the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Now, Mel Schilling is facing the most difficult chapter of her own as she told her followers plainly, "I honestly don't know how long I have left."

A Journey That Started with a Lemon-Sized Tumour

Schilling first revealed her diagnosis publicly when she disclosed she had been diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023, after a tumour she nicknamed "Terry" was discovered during a scan.

The tumour was successfully removed, and she was initially given the all-clear. However, that relief did not last, as she recently revealed in an emotional 12 March 2026 Instagram post that in late February 2024, a routine scan revealed small nodules in her lungs.

The cancer had spread, and Schilling underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy over the following two years, all while continuing to film "Married at First Sight." She was then told she was eligible for a clinical trial specific to her gene type, due to begin this month. Her hopes, she wrote, had soared again.

Over Christmas, however, Schilling began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down her right side. After a series of tests, she was told the cancer had reached the left side of her brain. She shared on Instagram:

"[...] Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do. Hearing those words changes everything."

The dating coach continued, "My light is starting to fade — and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love. Simple tasks have become incredibly difficult and I am relying on my beautiful family to look after me."

Schilling included a pleading message to anyone who might be putting off a medical check-up, writing, "If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn't feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life."

She posted the message alongside a touching photo with her husband and daughter, captioning it, "These two beside me are my everything."

An Outpouring of Love Online

Online, fans' responses to the news of Schilling's cancer diagnosis were immediate and deeply personal. Many said they had followed the dating coach throughout her entire run on the show, and the news hit them hard.

"This breaks my heart," one person commented. "I've watched all of Mel's MAFS seasons. She's my favorite. She Always [sic] has such wise advice, and she's so caring. Praying for a miracle."

The 16 rounds of chemotherapy she endured while still working stopped many in their tracks. "16 rounds of chemo! Wow what a fighter and then in the end devasting [sic] news," another commented.

Channel 4 broke its silence on the same day as her Instagram post.

Several fans noted how little of her private battle had shown on screen. "The strength of this lovely lady is truly inspiring," one wrote. "To watch her on the MAFS series one would never know the mental and physical struggle she surely must have been going through while filming."

The same observer added, "If by any chance you are reading the comments here Mel, please know that we are all behind you while you fight this demon called cancer and that if positive thoughts from us help in any way then you certainly have them in bucket loads."

Others shared their own experiences of illness, offering solidarity in place of sympathy. "Very sad to hear your news Mel [sic]," one fan typed. "You have been a trouper to battle on with your TV work whilst experiencing ill health."

"As long as your [sic] still breathing don't give up on your life," one commenter urged. "My life was on the line 5 months ago and I turned it around so can you." Another echoed that sentiment more directly, writing, "I guess you been [sic] told stuff. You need to fight the Fight. There are survival stories everywhere."

Channel 4 and Production Company Pay Tribute

Schilling has been part of the "MAFS" family since 2016, first on the Australian edition of the show before joining the UK version, which broadcasts on E4. However, last month she had announced her departure from the Australian series, with family and health her stated reasons for stepping back.

Channel 4 broke its silence on the same day as her Instagram post. "Mel has become a hugely valued and much-loved part of the Channel 4 family; to many of us she is a friend as well as a colleague," the channel said in a statement, adding:

"Her wisdom, warmth, humour, and kindness shine through, and these qualities mean that everyone involved in 'MAFS,' from the producers and contributors, to the viewers, love and respect her as much as we do."

MAFS Australia expert John Aiken has been confirmed to step in for Schilling for the remainder of the current UK series, which is currently in production.

CPL, the production company behind the UK show, also released a statement, sharing, "Mel is greatly loved and respected by everyone at CPL, and our thoughts with her and her family as they face this profoundly difficult time."

As for Schilling, she signed off her post with the same warmth her fans have long come to know, "With love and gratitude, Mel."
