Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Son Archie Celebrates His 7th Birthday as Meghan Reveals Rare Photo of the Kids

A royal birthday, two photographs Meghan Markle had never shared before, and within hours, the internet had thoughts. Plenty of them.

On 6 May 2026, Prince Archie turned seven, and his mother marked the occasion with a pair of Instagram images that gave royal watchers one of their most intimate glimpses yet into life at the Sussex household.

Before the day was out, royal watchers were dissecting everything from the children’s height difference to the mood of the photograph itself.

Meghan's tribute was brief and warm. "7 years later...happy birthday to our sweet boy," she wrote, finishing with a heart emoji.

The first image, shared as a physical print held between fingers, showed a bearded Prince Harry cradling a newborn Archie on his chest, seemingly taken within hours of the birth.

It was a photograph the public had never seen. The second showed two children standing at the water’s edge, backs turned to the camera beneath an expanse of mountains and blue sky.

One child stood noticeably taller than the other. No faces. No names. Just the wide-open landscape and the two small figures in it.

It was the second image that caught most attention online. Several commenters immediately noted how much Archie appeared to have grown, with one writing,

"Wow he has grown, his sister usually looks taller than him despite being younger and now he is lots taller than her."

Others zeroed in on Lilibet's clothing, with one fan writing with some amusement, "So Lily DOES have other clothes apart from her pink nightgown!!!"

The observation prompted a ripple of agreement from others who had been following Meghan's previous posts. Not every reaction was light-hearted, however.

Others focused on the children’s appearance altogether, with some commenters questioning the couple’s relaxed California style of dress despite Archie and Lilibet’s royal titles.

"They don't dress them very well considering they are a prince and princess, and never knows anyone go from dark haired to ginger before."

Some users were less focused on what the children were wearing and more on what appeared to be missing from the scene. "What a lonely looking photo to mark his 7th birthday," one commenter wrote.

Another echoed the sentiment, "Looks like a lonely life never anyone else nearby no family[sic]." It was a view not shared by all, but it surfaced often enough to become part of the conversation.

The response speaks to something particular about how the Sussex children are seen, and how rarely they are seen at all. Since moving to California when Archie was just 10 months old, Harry and Meghan have kept their family life largely out of public view.

Meghan has been careful to keep her children's faces off her Instagram feed entirely, even as she has posted more frequently since launching her As Ever lifestyle brand last year.

Archie has appeared feeding animals, watching a sunset, and now standing at the shore, always photographed from behind. For a boy who is sixth in line to the British throne, those carefully composed glimpses are, for most people, all there is.

His last visit to the United Kingdom came in June 2022, for the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the last time he was seen alongside members of the royal family.

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe, speaking to The Mirror, noted the distance that has grown between the King and his youngest grandchildren:

"I think King Charles is full of regrets over the whole situation, he definitely wouldn't have wanted it to go this way. He has spoken about how much he enjoys being a grandparent."

Meghan Markle’s message was brief: seven words and a heart. But the two photographs told a larger story — one of the very beginning, and one of now. A baby asleep on his father’s chest, and a boy tall enough to stand beside his little sister at the edge of the sea.
