Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Mark Their 8th Wedding Anniversary – One Detail About His Gift Drew Attention
A penguin walked into a kitchen and made the internet swoon. The reason why has everything to do with the most unexpectedly romantic anniversary gift Prince Harry has ever given his wife.
On Tuesday, May 19, Meghan Markle took to Instagram to mark eight years of marriage to Harry, flooding the platform with never-before-seen photographs from their unforgettable 2018 wedding.

She then followed with a surprisingly cosy behind-the-scenes glimpse at how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated the milestone at home in Montecito, California.

The Wedding Photos That Stopped the Scroll
Meghan posted two separate carousels, both captioned simply "Eight years ago today…" with photo credit to photographer Chris Allerton. The first collection treated fans to intimate snapshots from the couple's first dance at their evening reception at Frogmore House.

By that point in the evening, Meghan had changed out of her elegant Givenchy bridal gown into a sleek, halterneck reception dress — a form-fitting, backless white halter gown that showed off her toned shoulders and was a clear nod to glamorous evening wear.

Harry, dashing in a black velvet tuxedo with a bow tie, looked every bit smitten, his expression shifting between pure joy and barely-contained emotion throughout the shots. In one image, the two spin together with arms outstretched, beaming.

In another, Harry dips Meghan as the live band performs behind them on a stage draped in cascading white flowers. They steal a passionate kiss on the dance floor as their guests — visible in the background, hands raised and cheering — surround them in celebration.
The second carousel peeled back the curtain further on their big day, revealing candid moments from the ceremony and reception at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, watched by an estimated 1.9 billion people worldwide.

Among the most striking shots: Harry leaning toward Meghan to steal a kiss just after delivering his toast, a champagne flute raised in his hand.

There are also tender portraits of the couple in a grand, ornately decorated room of Windsor Castle — Meghan's cathedral-length lace-trimmed veil pooling dramatically on the intricate carpets — as well as a striking image taken inside the Gothic corridors of St George's Chapel, Meghan's flowing veil trailing behind her as she prepares to walk toward the altar.

A surprise highlight of the second post was a close-up shot of a silver-haired musician performing intently at a grand piano — Sir Elton John, who gave a private performance at the couple's lunchtime reception.

Also featured in the photographs was Isabel May, a British public relations executive and long-time confidante of Meghan's.
Harry's Gift That Stole the Show
Still, it was Meghan's Instagram Stories that had viewers talking most. She shared a sweet video of Harry padding into their kitchen in grey tracksuit bottoms and a dark polo shirt, grinning as he carried a lemon elderflower cake — the same flavour served at their royal wedding — adorned with lit candles.

Their children, Archie and Lilibet, could be heard excitedly singing in the background before enthusiastically shouting, "Blow them! Blow them!" Harry obligingly helped puff out the candles after Meghan melted viewers with a spontaneous "I love you."

Then came the gift. Harry presented Meghan with a bronze statue of two penguins standing arm in arm — and the story behind it is the kind of detail that reminds you why people fell in love with this couple in the first place.

As Meghan explained to Archie and Lilibet in the clip, the penguin theme traces back to their engagement party, where guests were asked to wear animal onesies — and Harry and Meghan chose to come as penguins.

Meghan shared a photo from that night: a mirror selfie of the two of them in full penguin costumes, grinning behind their beaks.

Reacting to the gift on camera, Meghan could be heard screeching with delight as she unwrapped the statue, Harry giggling in the background. "Oh my God!" she exclaimed. Responding to the symbolism, Meghan gushed, "We were penguins because we are together for life."

The couple also posed for a kiss beside the lemon elderflower cake in their kitchen — Meghan in a casual grey top, Harry leaning in — as the caption confirmed the flavour with a small cake emoji.

Not everyone was won over, however. "This is the creepiest thing ever!" one detractor declared. But, keeping things light, another offered simply, "Harry has good taste 👍💙🐧."

Eight Years On
Harry, 41, and Meghan, 44, wed on May 19, 2018, at St George's Chapel in a ceremony attended by the likes of Serena Williams, Gayle King, Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham, and George Clooney.
The following year, they welcomed their son, Archie. After stepping back from royal duties in January 2020, the couple relocated to Montecito, California, where their daughter Lilibet was born the following June.
The family has since built a life largely out of the public eye — though as Tuesday's posts made abundantly clear, Meghan is more than happy to offer the world a peek inside it, one carefully chosen moment at a time.
