Valerie Perrine, the acclaimed actress best known for her role in the original Superman films, has died at the age of 82.

She passed away Monday at her home in Los Angeles, according to her close friend, filmmaker Stacey Souther. While an official cause of death has not been confirmed, Perrine had been living with Parkinson’s disease and had been largely bedridden for the past decade.

Her family has shared that Perrine passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after years of fighting the disease. Her brother, Ken Perrine, paid tribute in an emotional message, remembering her as someone who “lived an extraordinary life most us can only dream of” and who “fought till the end and never gave up.”

In accordance with her final wishes, her family hopes to lay her to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills. A fundraiser has been launched to help cover funeral and burial expenses.
