A Catastrophic Night at LaGuardia

Late on March 22, 2026, Air Canada Jazz flight 8646 was moments from landing when everything went wrong. The aircraft collided with a fire truck on the runway, triggering a deadly chain of events. The crash claimed the lives of both pilots and injured dozens of passengers and crew.

The aircraft, a CRJ-900 traveling from Montreal, had been cleared to land when the collision occurred during runway operations. Authorities later confirmed the fire truck had been responding to another aircraft emergency nearby. Investigators are now closely examining communication between air traffic control and ground crews.

At the front of the aircraft sat Tremblay, a senior flight attendant with years of experience. She was strapped into her jump seat, positioned directly behind the cockpit. What happened next still feels almost unreal.

According to her daughter, Sarah Lépine, "At the moment of impact, her seat was ejected more than a hundred meters from the plane. They found her, and she was still strapped into her seat."

Despite the violence of the crash, Tremblay remained conscious throughout the ordeal. Her survival has since been described as nothing short of extraordinary.

Why She Survived

Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti offered insight into the mechanics behind her survival. He explained that the structure of her seat may have made all the difference. He remarked that the flight attendant's seat is usually a kind of jump seat that folds down and is always bolted to the wall of the cockpit.

He added that the seat was very robust and designed to withstand more crash loads than passenger seats, since flight attendants must be able to help passengers evacuate after an accident. He also described her survival as a miracle, especially given the extent of the destruction at the nose of the airplane.

Severe Injuries and a Long Road Ahead

While Tremblay survived, the extent of her injuries is staggering. Her family's GoFundMe page reveals the full scope of her condition. "My mother, Solange Tremblay, was the senior flight attendant aboard this flight... During the crash, [...] she was ejected over 320 feet from the wreckage."

The fundraiser continues with painful detail. "She was found still strapped in her jump seat lying on the tarmac. My mom was conscious for all of this, and has sustained severe injuries from this event." Among those injuries are two shattered legs with open fractures, requiring multiple surgeries and metal plates.

She also suffered a fractured spine and significant skin loss, requiring grafts. The family shared that she has already undergone a blood transfusion due to complications. Even now, infection remains a major concern.

Tremblay is currently hospitalized in New York, where she faces months of recovery. Her daughter wrote, "My mom has suffered so much from this event and regrettably her struggles are far from over. She will have to undergo several other surgeries, along with intensive rehabilitation to learn how to walk again."

The emotional toll is just as heavy. "At the moment our greatest fear is the risk of infection which could lead to other horrifying complications," the family shared. Despite everything, Tremblay's dedication to her career remains clear. "My mother dedicated her entire life as a flight attendant, and was very proud of her work."

A Community Rallies Around Her

Support has poured in from across the aviation world and beyond. Messages on social media reflect both shock and admiration. "It's an absolute miracle it sounds like," one commenter wrote. Another added, "She is lucky to be alive."

Others are already looking ahead to her legacy. "One day, Solange Tremblay will be a legend in our aviation industry, never forgotten." The emotional weight of her journey has also struck many. "The recovery will be a long process, but I do hope she'll be able to move about as she was before, prior to the accident."

And perhaps most simply, one message captured what many feel, "What an amazing story out of tragedy. She is certainly one brave flight attendant.🙏🏻"

Not the Only Survivor in Need

Tremblay is not alone in her recovery. A separate fundraiser has been launched for a colleague, Francois Grenier, who also survived the crash. The organizers wrote, "By some miracle, they both survived — something we are profoundly grateful for."

But survival is only the beginning. "The journey ahead will be long, filled with physical recovery and emotional healing," the page reads. The aviation community is now stepping up to support both crew members during this difficult time.

The Bigger Questions Still Unanswered

As Tremblay continues to recover, investigators are working to understand how such a tragedy occurred. Early reports suggest the collision happened at approximately 24 miles per hour. Communication between the aircraft and ground vehicles is expected to be a central focus of the investigation.

Safety expert Anthony Brickhouse emphasized the importance of that factor, as he noted that communication would be a major part of the investigation. For now, the focus remains on Tremblay's recovery.

Her family is asking for support to help cover medical costs and allow loved ones to stay by her side. As photos emerge of her in the hospital, they serve as a powerful reminder of both the fragility and resilience of life.

And while many questions remain about the LaGuardia crash itself, one thing is already clear: Solange Tremblay's survival is a story that people will not forget anytime soon.
