Plane Crashes Into Residential Building – Details Emerge

What began as a routine flight quickly turned into a deadly accident after an aircraft went down in a crowded residential area, narrowly avoiding further casualties.

A routine flight turned into a horrifying nightmare in southeastern Brazil on Monday when a small plane slammed into a residential building just moments after takeoff, leaving three people dead and two others fighting to recover in the hospital.

The aircraft crashed in Belo Horizonte only minutes after departing Pampulha Airport, according to local officials and firefighters. Five people were on board when the terrifying incident unfolded, sending shockwaves through the neighborhood and sparking panic among nearby residents.

A Flight That Lasted Only Minutes

Authorities confirmed that the pilot and another man seated in the co-pilot's seat died at the scene, while three passengers were pulled from the wreckage alive and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Hours later, one of those survivors succumbed to his injuries.

The remaining two survivors were later reported to be in stable condition as investigators scrambled to piece together what caused the aircraft to plunge from the sky so suddenly. Fire officials said the plane had taken off early in the afternoon and was headed to São Paulo. But the journey barely began before disaster struck.

According to authorities, the aircraft stayed airborne for only a few minutes before crashing directly into a three-story residential building in Belo Horizonte. Miraculously, no residents inside the building suffered physical injuries, and officials said there was no major structural damage to the property despite the violent impact.

As news of the tragedy spread online, stunned social media users reacted with heartbreak and disbelief. "Prayers to their families," one person wrote. "What a tragedy," another commented. Others reflected on how quickly life can change, with someone writing, "Life can be so unexpected." Another shocked local resident added, "That happened here."

Victims Identified as More Details Emerge

As investigators continued examining the crash site, authorities revealed more information about the victims on board. Local reports identified the third victim as 50-year-old Leonardo Berganholi Martins, who later died at João XXIII Hospital after being rescued from the wreckage, suffering from multiple fractures.

Officials had already confirmed the deaths of pilot Wellinton de Oliveira Pereira, 34, and Fernando Moreira Souto, 36, the son of Jequitinhonha Mayor Nilo Souto. Authorities said Fernando had been seated in the co-pilot's seat at the time of the crash. However, police clarified that he was not officially acting as co-pilot and confirmed there was no certified co-pilot onboard the aircraft.

The Civil Police of Minas Gerais said the two survivors were identified as Arthur Schaper Berganholi, 25, and Hemerson Cleiton Almeida Souza, 53. Both remain hospitalized following the devastating crash.

Passenger Left Plane Before Fatal Takeoff

Additional revelations about the doomed flight have added yet another emotional layer to the tragedy. According to family friend and lawyer Igor Afonso, Leonardo's daughter, Julia Berganholi, had originally been onboard the aircraft after it departed from Teófilo Otoni.

But in a twist that may have saved her life, she disembarked during the stop in Belo Horizonte before the plane continued toward São Paulo. Police also confirmed that two women exited the aircraft during the Pampulha Airport stopover, while another passenger boarded before takeoff. Only moments later, the plane crashed.

Residents inside the impacted building described scenes of sheer terror immediately after the aircraft tore through the property. One woman living in the building said she desperately tried to flee but found herself trapped when the doors suddenly jammed following the crash.

"I tried to run and get out, but I couldn't because the doors were jammed,” she said in an interview. "The plan's engine was in the hallway between my living room and the utility room."

Her chilling account underscored just how close the aircraft came to causing an even greater catastrophe in the densely populated residential area. Authorities are continuing to investigate what caused the plane to go down so soon after takeoff.
