It was the clip that stopped the internet. For a brief moment, the carefully curated image of France's first couple seemed to crack in public view.

A year ago, cameras caught what looked like the French First Lady, Brigitte Macron, pushing her husband, President Emmanuel Macron, in the face as the couple stepped off their plane in Vietnam.

The footage spread within hours, fueling speculation across social media and international headlines alike. Now, a new book is offering what its author claims is the real explanation, and the name at the center of it belongs to a celebrated Iranian actress.

The Macron camp, for its part, has denied the claims.

The Moment the Plane Door Opened

On 25 May 2025, the French presidential couple touched down in Hanoi for the start of a week-long Southeast Asia tour. As the aircraft door swung open, the president appeared at the entrance, apparently unaware that cameras were already rolling.

Moments later, Brigitte's hands appeared in frame, pushing firmly against her husband's face. He looked startled before quickly composing himself and turning to smile and wave at the waiting Vietnamese officials.

She then descended the stairs without taking his offered arm, using the railing instead.

In the immediate aftermath, some allies of the president suggested online disinformation may have amplified confusion around the footage before officials later confirmed the video was authentic. A close associate of the president said at the time:

The Book That Changed the Conversation

Nearly a year later, Paris Match political correspondent Florian Tardif has put forward a very different version of events in his new book, "An (Almost) Perfect Couple," published on May 13, 2026.

Speaking on RTL radio to promote the book, Tardif alleged that in the months leading up to the Vietnam trip, the president had maintained what the author described as a platonic relationship with acclaimed Franco-Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani.

Some of the alleged messages exchanged "went quite far," according to Tardif's sources, including one in which the president was said to have written:

"I find you very pretty."

The book further claims that on the plane, Brigitte allegedly came across one of those messages on her husband's phone. According to an extract serialized in the publication, what reportedly unsettled her was not the message itself but what it implied.

According to a friend quoted in the extract, Brigitte felt as though she was being erased.

One Moment, Still No Simple Explanation

Brigitte's entourage wasted no time responding. "Brigitte Macron categorically denied this account directly to the author on March 5, specifying that she never looks at her husband's mobile phone," a representative said.

The Élysée also noted pointedly that the specific claim had not been published in the book itself.

But the reason the story continues to resurface has as much to do with public fascination as with the footage itself.

A single unguarded moment, caught on camera as the plane door opened in Hanoi, became a Rorschach test for everything observers already wanted to believe about the Macrons' unconventional marriage.

The couple’s relationship has long drawn intense public attention because Brigitte was Emmanuel's former drama teacher when they met in Amiens during his teenage years.

Despite a 24-year age gap and years of public scrutiny, the two remained together and eventually married in 2007, turning their relationship into one of the most closely examined political marriages in France.

That longstanding fascination helped fuel the intense scrutiny surrounding the Hanoi footage, with viewers dissecting nearly every second of the exchange.

A lip-reading expert later analyzed the footage and claimed Brigitte seemed to mutter "Dégage, espèce de loser" ("Stay away, you loser") while passing her husband on the stairs, though the exchange could not be independently verified.

By then, the footage had already escaped the boundaries of any official explanation.

The footage became such a fixture of political pop culture that Donald Trump later joked during a White House Easter event that Emmanuel was still feeling the effects of the incident.

The president later criticized the remark as inappropriate and beneath the expected standard of political discourse.

Online, reactions ranged from skeptical to sympathetic. “A relationship with this age gap will nearly always fail at some point. Macron is at that point,” one commenter wrote, while another said, “‘Never looked at his phone’ doesn’t pass any wife lie detector test.”

The term “platonic relationship” also became a source of widespread online mockery, with one user joking that it had “caused more international instability than some trade sanctions.”

Others, however, expressed sympathy for Brigitte, with one commenter writing, “Brigitte seems like a really nice and elegant woman.”

The Actress Who Became an Unlikely Headline

Golshifteh Farahani, 42, the actress suddenly thrust into the center of the Macron speculation, is one of the most acclaimed stars to have emerged from Iran. She began performing in theater at age six and made her film debut at 14, winning Best Actress at the Fajr Film Festival.

After starring in Ridley Scott's "Body of Lies" in 2008, she became the first Iranian actress to appear in a major Hollywood production and has since been based in Paris.

She has consistently dismissed speculation about any connection to the president. She said in March:

"I think that there is a lack of love for some people and they need to create romances like this to fill [the void]."

Still No Clean Resolution

The president has continued to maintain that the moment in Hanoi was merely a private joke between him and his wife.

Tardif, meanwhile, suggested that officials at the Élysée later regretted not addressing the incident more openly, arguing it could have humanized the presidential couple rather than reinforcing an image of perfection.

Whether or not that interpretation is fair, the footage from that plane door remains one of the most dissected moments of the 48-year-old’s presidency — particularly for a couple whose relationship has long been framed as an enduring political love story.
