His comments ahead of the Bahamas ceremony quickly drew attention online.
Asked by a reporter during a May 21 Oval Office event whether he planned to attend his son's wedding that weekend, the president was direct about his position. "He'd like me to go," he told reporters:
"But it's going to be just a small, little private affair and I'm going to try and make it."
Why President Trump Said The Timing Was 'Not Good'
The president openly acknowledged the difficult timing surrounding the wedding, describing it as “not good timing” amid ongoing international matters, including tensions involving Iran, which complicated his ability to attend the ceremony.
He also joked about the scrutiny surrounding the decision, suggesting that he would likely face criticism from the media regardless of whether he attended or stayed behind.

The following day, on May 22, the president announced on Truth Social that he would not be traveling to the Bahamas for the wedding celebrations after all.
While expressing disappointment about missing the occasion, he said he felt his responsibilities as president required him to remain at the White House in Washington, D.C., during what he described as an important period for the country.
He closed on a warm note, congratulating his son and new daughter-in-law.
How Donald Jr. and Bettina Anderson's Relationship Began
Don Jr., 48, and Bettina Anderson, 39, first appeared together publicly in December 2024, photographed holding hands during a nighttime stroll in Palm Beach, Florida, in celebration of Bettina's birthday.
The two had reportedly been dating for about six months by then, with Don Jr. introducing her publicly as his girlfriend during that period.

Their engagement was announced on 15 December 2025 at a White House holiday event, with the president making the introduction.
Don Jr. had proposed at Camp David on 13 December, during a trip to celebrate Bettina's birthday, later admitting he had not been entirely sure she would say yes:
"I'm not usually at a loss for words, because I'm usually doing the ranting and raving really well. I want to thank Bettina for that one word: 'Yes.'"
What President Trump Has Said About Bettina Anderson
Behind the scenes, the president made no secret of his approval of the new addition to the family.
According to a source, the president was pleased both with Bettina's appearance and her demeanor, noting that she had found her footing within the powerful family after an initial adjustment period.
According to a source, the president had grown fond of Bettina and appreciated the way she had settled into the family dynamic over time.
"The president is happy with the way Bettina looks, and wants his son to be satisfied in his next mate," the source said. He also expressed a simple, sincere wish for the couple: that they "have a great marriage."
Family Members Joined The Bahamas Celebration
The May 24 ceremony brought together approximately 40 guests on a private island in the Bahamas, including the groom's five children, as well as his siblings, Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Tiffany Trump.
According to a source, Bettina had built strong bonds across the family well before the wedding day.

Don Jr.'s eldest daughter, Kai Trump, 19, appears to have developed a particularly close bond with Bettina. "Kai really likes Bettina and gets along with her well," the insider said:
"Kai and Bettina have made TikToks in the past and always have a lot of fun together."
According to the source, Bettina had developed a positive relationship with Vanessa Trump well before her romance with Don Jr. became serious.

The insider noted that the two women connected independently of Don Jr., adding that Vanessa reportedly believes Bettina and Donald Trump Jr. complement each other well and fully supports their relationship.
Even as international tensions kept him in Washington, the groom's dad made clear that his son's wedding — and the family's newest chapter — remained deeply important to him.
