Behind the polished career, devoted marriage, and packed family life was a man whose instinct to protect others never switched off…not even in the most terrifying moment of all.

What began as a family getaway in Florida ended in a nightmare no loved one could ever prepare for. And the most devastating part of this story is the detail one man's family now has to carry forever.

To many, Ryan Jennings seemed like the kind of man who made everything look steady. He had a big career, a loving and growing family, deep community ties, and the reputation of someone who always showed up when people needed him most.

A Life Built Around Showing Up

On his LinkedIn profile, Ryan described himself as a senior healthcare partnerships and experiential strategy leader in the Portland, Maine area.

He said he worked at the intersection of healthcare strategy, patient engagement, and experiential marketing, leading national initiatives for major brands and designing programs focused on awareness, education, and access to care. His profile also made clear that he was no small player in his field.

Ryan also led national wellness and mobile health programs, worked on growth, client engagement, business development, provider engagement, community health initiatives, logistics, operations, and marketing.

Apart from work, he said he loved coaching youth athletics, endurance sports, and creating strong community connections. Friends and family had described him as dependable, warm, and endlessly generous. The polished executive title was real, of course, but so was the man behind it: the husband, the dad, the coach, the helper, and the person who never stopped thinking about others.

And heartbreakingly, that is exactly where this story leads…

Ryan's wife, Emily Jennings, is now facing an unimaginable loss while trying to hold the family they built together. One family friend put the devastation she now feels in brutally simple terms, telling WMTW, "The love of her life is gone."

The Family Ryan Chose and Cherished

That line says almost everything. But the fuller picture is somehow even more emotional. According to loved ones, Ryan and Emily met about ten years ago. At the time, she was a single mom, and when a fire tore through Emily's apartment, Ryan gave her and her son a place to stay.

That moment changed everything. Very quickly, Emily and her son became part of Ryan's family. In one of the story's most tender details, Ryan embraced her son as his own, even though he was not his biological child.

They would often listen to "My Boy" by Elvie Shane together, and Emily said it was their song. That detail stings even more now, as it speaks to the kind of bond Ryan built, not just through words, but through everyday love.

Emily described her husband as her rock, and said he was always happy to help, whether that meant housework, finding her a new dress, or simply being there in the way she needed most. She said gifts and acts of service were his love languages, and by her telling, he spoke both fluently.

After they married, the couple had two daughters and bought a home in North Yarmouth. In yet another heartbreaking twist, Emily had just learned she was pregnant with their fourth child shortly before the family left for Florida.

Warnings in the Water

That detail alone is enough to stop anyone in their tracks: A growing family was looking ahead to its future, with absolutely no idea how quickly everything was about to change.

Before the full horror of what happened became widely known, the family had simply been on vacation together. It was supposed to be a break, a few peaceful days along that beautiful stretch of Atlantic coastline north of Palm Beach.

But that same coastline has also seen sudden and violent rip currents in recent years. And that fateful week, conditions were especially dangerous.

As Bangor Daily News reported, most of Florida's eastern coast had been under a rip current red flag for much of the week. Chuck Caracozza, a forecaster at the National Weather Service's Miami office, said there had been a high risk all week due to strong winds that could create dangerous surf.

Rip currents form when a narrow stream of water moves quickly away from shore, through the surf zone, and beyond the breaking waves. They do not always turn deadly, but under the wrong conditions, they can overpower even extremely strong swimmers.

The statistics are sobering. According to the same report, rip currents account for about 80% of rescues at U.S. beaches each year, and roughly 70 people drown in them annually in the United States.

Maine, notably, has never had a rip current fatality. Florida, meanwhile, has seen almost 300 over the last 15 years. Even more chilling, the area near Juno Beach where Ryan died had reportedly seen more than a half dozen rip current drownings in just the past two years.

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the Palm Beach County Fire Department initiated a water rescue at Juno Beach around 3:25 p.m., and officials said the low tide and onshore wind at the time were consistent with rip current activity.

Authorities also said Ryan and his children were not swimming in an area overseen by lifeguards. When the current formed, Ryan, his son, and one of his daughters were pulled away from shore. In a matter of moments, an ordinary swim became a desperate fight in moving water.

What Emily Wants the World to Know

Then Ryan did what so many loved ones now say was completely in character for him: he did not think of himself first. Emily later shared the devastating truth:

"Ryan lost his battle yesterday, saving our children from a rip current. He threw Jax to safety to get help and held up my Charlie above water until someone could get to them. His last gift to me was returning my children alive. Our hero, like always."

It is almost impossible to read that without feeling your chest tighten. According to Bangor Daily News, Ryan instinctively threw his 12-year-old son toward shore and out of the current. He then grabbed his 9-year-old daughter and hoisted her above his head, keeping her above water as they were both dragged away from land.

Both children survived… Ryan did not. That was his final act. Emily later said, "He made sure they made it out alive." She added, "He truly was our hero."

In another heart-wrenching passage, Emily said Ryan died the same way he lived: thinking of others first. And she made clear there was no one he cared about more than his children.

She also admitted she cannot yet imagine how to move forward. "I just don't know how I'm going to go on," she said through tears. Those words are as raw as grief gets.

The Legacy He Was Building Long Before This Tragedy

Ryan's mother, Gail McLaughlin Toti, has also spoken movingly about the man her son was long before this tragedy made headlines. She said he was "everybody's best friend," and that whether someone was a CEO or a janitor, Ryan treated all with kindness and love.

That image keeps coming up again and again: Not just a good dad or a good husband, but one of those rare people who made everyone around him feel seen.

Gail said Ryan grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, as a talented multisport athlete. He carried that love of sports and fitness through his entire life.

In recent years, he had started coaching Greely youth football, where his son played, and also helped with wrestling, lacrosse, and other sports. George Spino, who coached Greely's middle school football team alongside Ryan, said, "He was always willing to jump in, raise his hand and say 'I want to help.'"

George added, "No matter who you were or where you were, Ryan saw the best in you. And darn it, he was gonna bring it out." It is exactly the kind of tribute that makes a tragic loss feel even heavier, because it captures how actively Ryan was shaping the people around him.

On social media, messages have poured in from friends, neighbors, and acquaintances sharing memories and grief. Among the comments were direct tributes like, "He was everyone's biggest cheerleader," "He was someone they could always turn to when things were tough," and "Ryan's selfless act of love and sacrifice will never be forgotten."

As his loved ones grieve, support for the Jennings family has surged. A GoFundMe created for Emily and the children describes her as "a devoted mother of three children who has always put her family and friends first" and says Ryan was "not only Emily's soul mate, but also a loving father and friend to many."

The fundraiser says his heroic actions were a testament to the person he was, and that his death leaves a tremendous void in the lives of everyone who knew him.

It also says Emily is now left with the challenge of caring for their three children and rebuilding her life after an unimaginable tragedy.

The page thanks supporters for helping "this beautiful and exceptional family" and says every donation will give Emily the time and resources she needs as she navigates this heartbreaking new reality. At the moment, the fundraiser has brought in more than $160,000 of its $170,000 goal.

Ryan's survivors include his parents, Gail and Ernest Toti; his sisters, Martha Mathews and Kristy McMahan; his niece, Rylee McMahan; his siblings-in-law, Alex McMahan, Zach Woods, and Cam Woods; and his mother- and father-in-law, Steve and Katie Woods.

Behind the public grief is a very large family now forced to live with a loss that feels almost impossible to accept.

A Final Chapter That Says Everything

And even in the middle of that, his mother is already thinking about how Ryan's values can live on. Gail and Ernest plan to start a scholarship in his honor, awarding $5,000 each year to a student from the Cumberland-North Yarmouth area who best embodies Ryan's selfless spirit.

In one especially lovely detail, she said she does not want it based on grades alone. "He wasn't always a straight-A student, so I didn't wanna give it out based on grades," Gail explained. "It's more about character."

Even the scholarship being built in his memory is designed around the exact thing people say defined him most: an open heart.

Gail said she wants kids in the school system, including Ryan's own children, to understand what it truly means to live that way. And in one final tribute, she said, "He really, truly made our family and the community a better place. He left it better than he found it."

That is the line that lingers.

Because this is not only the story of how Ryan died; it is also the story of how he lived, as a healthcare leader, a coach, a son, a husband, a father, a stepfather, a friend, and, in the end, the man who used his final strength to save his children.

And that is why this story hurts so much: His last heroic act was not separate from his life…it was the clearest reflection of it.

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Emily, all of her and Ryan's children, Gail, Ernest, the entire family, their loved ones, community, friends, and all who knew and loved Ryan as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their grief. RIP, dear Ryan.
