From Army Soldier to Rap Icon With a Dark Past — Can You Guess Who He Is? (30+ Photos)
Before he patrolled television screens as a tough-as-nails detective, this superstar was dodging bullets in the infantry and robbing jewelry stores to survive the streets.
His journey from an orphaned boy in New Jersey to a pioneer of gangsta rap is nothing short of a cinematic thriller. But behind the gold chains and hit records lies a history of jewelry heists and military desertion, a journey that reads like a movie script.
While he is now a devoted family man, his journey began in the shadows of New Jersey and the rough streets of Los Angeles. Most fans have no idea about the longtime partner who stood by him long before his famous marriage.

From Tragedy to the Infantry
Born as Tracy Marrow in Newark, New Jersey, this future icon faced the ultimate loss before he even finished elementary school. His mother passed away from a sudden heart attack when he was only in the third grade, leaving a massive void in his young life.
Just four years later, tragedy struck again when his father also died from heart failure. He shared, "Both of my parents died really young — still in their thirties — of massive heart failure, four years apart."
By the time he was 12, he had lost both parents, growing up as an only child, processing grief largely on his own.

1970s Throwback
Left to navigate the world as an only child, he eventually moved to California, where the "wildness" of his environment began to take hold. By the time he was out of high school, he was already a father and desperately needed a way to provide for his young family.

"When I had my daughter, I was like, man, I'm going to go to jail, I got to do something and I went to an enlistment office. Next thing you know, I'm in the military, four years infantry," he'd later say.
In 1976, he walked into an enlistment office to join the military. He served in the Army for four years as part of the 25th Infantry Division.
His military career wasn't exactly a straight line to success, though. At one point, he and a small group of friends actually stole an infantry rug and briefly deserted.
He eventually returned, took his punishment, and finished his training as a squad leader in Hawaii. It was during his time in the barracks that he bought his first set of turntables and speakers, planting the seeds for a future he couldn't yet imagine.

A Life of Crime
Returning to civilian life didn't immediately lead to the bright lights of Hollywood. Instead, the man who would eventually play a cop on TV spent years on the other side of the law.
He once opened up about his past on Untold Stories of Hip Hop, revealing he was a prolific bank and jewelry store robber. He admitted the group started off unarmed but quickly escalated their high-stakes hustling.

Reflecting on those dangerous days, he confessed that he didn't like talking about it. "You know what it is, it's a very difficult thing, because I got people still in the penitentiary. They're saying they didn't do it, here I am on TV," he explained.

From the Streets to the Spotlight
The transition from the streets to the studio began in the early 1980s. He became one of the early pioneers of a style that told raw stories about street life, helping shape what would become known as gangsta rap.

His 1987 debut album, "Rhyme Pays," was a massive success despite being the first ever to carry a voluntary warning label for its explicit lyrics. He became a voice for a generation, even as he transitioned into acting.
Today, many recognize him from his long-running role on "Law & Order: SVU," where he has portrayed Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola since 2000. Still, he never left music behind.

The Golden Era (1988–1992)
While many know him for his rap hits like "Colors," he has always marched to the beat of his own drum. He even fronted a heavy metal band called Body Count, which is still going strong today with their latest album, "Merciless."
Balancing a legendary TV career with his aggressive music style is a delicate act. "I act for the money — and I do music to remain sane," he recently revealed about his dual life.

The Muse Before Coco
While the world now knows him as one half of a famous duo with his wife Coco, there was another woman who stood by him during his rise to fame.

Darlene Ortiz is often considered hip-hop royalty for her role as his longtime muse. They met in 1985 at the legendary L.A. venue Radiotron when she was just 17 years old.
She famously appeared on the cover of his album "Power" in a bikini while holding a shotgun, a photo that shocked 1980s culture.

The couple was together for 17 years and shared a son, Tracy Marrow Jr., who has grown up to be quite the entrepreneur. Darlene later wrote a book about her life after her famous partner, following their split in 2001.

Fans often remark on how much Tracy Jr. takes after his father. One Instagram picture of the father-son duo attracted comments such as, "Wow he looks like you! Happy Birthday Lil Ice," "He's VERY handsome. Happy birthday ❤️🎂🥳," and "Handsome fella."

The Reign of Coco
Shortly after his split from Darlene, Ice-T met Nicole "Coco" Austin, sparking a whirlwind romance that quickly attracted attention. Their relationship moved quickly, leading to a marriage in 2002, though they didn't make it official on paper until 2006.

The rapper has been vocal about why their relationship is so strong, noting that they are almost like twins. He explains why their marriage works by comparing it to a plant that needs constant watering and care.

The Early Coco Years
Ice-T admits that his household has a very specific vibe that might not be for everyone. "We're like the Osbournes," he said. "We have a different dynamic in our house. But it's not harmful. That's the main thing. It's us."

Despite their loud personalities, the couple actually waited to expand their family for over a decade. Coco wanted to finish several personal goals before they welcomed their daughter, Chanel Nicole, in 2015.

The Ultimate Mini-Me
When Chanel arrived, fans were absolutely stunned by one thing: the little girl was the spitting image of her father. Ice-T has been open about the most surprising part of being a father for the third time later in life.

He mentioned that having Chanel gave him a sense of clarity he didn't have when he was younger and "hustling" to build his career. "I think the clarity that I have with [Chanel]. When I had my first kid I was in the middle of the wildness of becoming Ice-T," he shared.

"Muhammad Ali said it, he said when a man has a child in the second half of his life, it resets his life," he explained. "When Chanel was born, all of a sudden I got [healthier], I'm in shape. Because you can start to slow down—I can't start to slow down."

It's hard to believe the man we see on our screens every week started out as a jewelry thief and a deserting soldier. Ice-T has truly proven that a parenting is a lot different when you've lived through the fire and come out the other side.
