A man fatally struck by a Frontier Airlines jet after breaching security at Denver International Airport (DEN) has now been identified, as investigators continue examining how he reached an active runway moments before takeoff.

The investigation also revealed the man's extensive arrest record, including prior violent crime charges, and the events that unfolded before the fatal collision.

The terrifying incident unfolded around 11:19 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, as Frontier Flight 4345 prepared to depart Denver for Los Angeles, according to a series of statements posted by Denver International Airport on X.

Officials said a "pedestrian" was struck during takeoff by the Airbus A321, which was carrying 231 people.

Emergency crews rushed to the runway after an engine fire broke out following the impact, though the Denver Fire Department quickly extinguished it. Smoke was later reported inside the cabin, prompting passengers to evacuate before they were bused back to the terminal.

In a later airport update, DEN confirmed the man "jumped the perimeter fence" and was struck "just two minutes later while crossing the runway."

The Man Has Been Identified — But How Did He Reach the Runway?

According to KKTV 11 News, the person was identified as 41-year-old Michael Mott. Authorities said investigators believe he intentionally entered the runway to end his life. The death was ruled a suicide by the medical examiner, and officials said no note was recovered.

Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington said operators initially mistook the trespasser for wildlife after ground detection sensors picked up movement near the perimeter fence at 11:10 p.m.

"DEN's operator on duty reviewed the alarm and identified a herd of deer just outside of the perimeter fence, very near to where the incident occurred," Washington said. He added that camera views alternated between the animals and the trespasser, while nearby ditches temporarily blocked visibility.

While DEN explained how the trespass unfolded, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) audio offered a chilling glimpse into the moments before impact.

Inside the Final Moments Before the Collision

As reported by TMZ, audio captured a female controller warning colleagues that a person was walking on the runway shortly before Frontier Flight 4345 struck him during takeoff.

The recordings also revealed frantic exchanges between controllers after the collision, including reports of "limbs" and human remains scattered across the runway while emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Pilots later confirmed the aircraft had hit a person and experienced an engine fire. Frontier told the outlet that smoke was later reported inside the cabin, leading passengers to evacuate the Airbus A321 via emergency slides as a precaution.

According to DEN officials, 12 passengers reported minor injuries during the evacuation, and five were taken to local hospitals. The airport later said most passengers eventually departed Denver on a replacement Frontier flight.

The Troubled Background of the Runway Trespasser

Investigators later uncovered a lengthy criminal history tied to Mott. Records reviewed by the New York Post showed he had more than 20 arrests in Colorado dating back to 2002.

According to the report, Mott was first arrested as a teenager on lower-level offenses, including shoplifting and underage alcohol consumption. Over the following years, his arrests escalated into more serious crimes.

In 2005, Mott was arrested on an attempted murder charge involving a gun. Court records cited by the outlet showed he later pleaded guilty to second-degree assault causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to six years in prison.

While incarcerated, he was later charged again with felony assault involving a weapon. After his release, records show he faced additional arrests tied to domestic violence, menacing, burglary, driving under the influence (DUI), trespassing, hit-and-run, resisting arrest, fighting in public, and violating protection orders.

Mott was also charged with attempting to escape prison custody in 2017. In a separate 2020 case involving allegations that he assaulted a police officer, prosecutors later dismissed the charges.

The news outlet also said Mott was most recently arrested in April on charges including felony trespassing, property damage, and resisting arrest in Colorado Springs, according to the report. Authorities also said he had been experiencing homelessness before the airport incident.

Denver Airport Reviews Security Response After Fatal Collision

Although officials said the perimeter fence appeared intact, the incident raised new questions about how a man was able to reach an active runway undetected.

According to Washington, the airport has already launched an after-action review examining the incident response, the ongoing investigation, and Denver International's perimeter security procedures.

Investigators are continuing to review surveillance footage, airport security measures, and Mott's movements before he entered the restricted area. The investigation remains ongoing, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been notified.
