For years, Wiz Khalifa has been synonymous with chart-topping hits, sold-out shows, and a career that helped define a generation of hip-hop fans. Yet the story behind the rapper's stage name is far more personal than many people realize.

During an appearance on Bunnie Xo's podcast in 2025, Wiz Khalifa opened up about the family influences that inspired the name he has carried throughout his career.

According to the rapper — born Cameron Jibril Thomaz — both parts of his stage name were tied to important figures in his life and reflected values that shaped him from a young age.

While discussing the origins of his name, the North Dakota native explained that he spent much of his childhood at his grandfather's home alongside his uncles whenever his mother was busy. Those years left a lasting impact.

"It was my mom's little brother, but it's my mom's father as well," he explained, noting that both his uncle and grandfather influenced his decision to adopt the name.

As for the first half of his stage name, it came from an entirely different source.

"My granddad is like — well, he was, he passed away — but he's straight Muslim," Khalifa said. He recalled his grandfather praying five times a day, spending significant time at the mosque, and helping people throughout the community, including those who were incarcerated.

These were attributes that made a powerful impression on him as a child and eventually inspired the second half of his stage name

In Arabic, "Khalifah" is commonly translated as "successor" or "deputy." The term has deep historical and religious significance within Islam, where it has traditionally been used to refer to the leader or successor who followed the Prophet Muhammad.

As for the first half of his stage name, it came from an entirely different source. According to Khalifa, the original version was actually Wisdom Khalifa. However, he continued:

"But my dad, being cool as hell, he took the 'dom' off and just started calling me 'Wiz.' He was like, 'I don't like 'Wisdom.' I don't like that. Just Wiz.'"

Khalifa later expanded on the story during a separate 2025 interview, explaining that the nickname was connected to his childhood interests and academic habits.

"Wiz comes from me always being into technology," he said. "Just being, like, a smart dude in general." He credited his father for encouraging education from an early age, recalling how he was expected to work on projects even during summer breaks.

As a result, he described himself as a somewhat "nerdy" kid growing up. His father's shortened nickname eventually caught on with friends and neighbors. "My dad used to just call me Wiz, and everybody on the block would just be like, 'Yo, that's young Wiz,'" he said.

"So it kind of just stuck," the rapper added. Eventually, the two names came together. "I just put 'em both together and then came up with it."

Interestingly, while millions of fans know him as Wiz Khalifa, the rapper has suggested that those closest to him use a different name altogether.

Beyond the name itself, Khalifa said his grandfather's influence extended far deeper. During the conversation with Bunnie Xo, he reflected on the lessons he learned from watching his grandfather transform his life.

According to the rapper, his grandfather had experienced significant struggles before embracing religion. He revealed that his grandfather had spent time in jail and battled drug problems before turning his life around and dedicating himself to helping others facing similar challenges.

Rather than dwelling on the past, Khalifa focused on what came next. He said his grandfather taught him the importance of family, personal discipline, leadership, and maintaining a strong daily routine.

He also remembered him as a tough and "stern" presence who commanded respect from those around him. Looking back, the rapper described having that kind of role model as invaluable, sharing:

"He was super gangster, he was really upfront. Everybody respected him, too. So, you know, just having that as, like, a backbone was... yeah, that's great for a young man."

Interestingly, while millions of fans know him as Wiz Khalifa, the rapper has suggested that those closest to him use a different name altogether.

During a conversation with Benny Blanco and Lil Dicky earlier this year, the topic turned to whether romantic partners call artists by their stage names. Khalifa's answer was straightforward. "If I ever even meet a chick that I plan on dating, I'll tell her my name first," he said.

It serves as a reminder that behind one of rap's most recognizable stage names is a person whose identity was shaped long before the fame arrived — by a supportive father, a respected grandfather, and the lessons both left behind.
