Al Roker revealed the condition of his teenage son in a recent public engagement and shared how he remains positive despite the situation, according to Today.

Roker, along with his journalist wife, Deborah Roberts, were in attendance at the 2018 ADAPT Leadership Awards Gala on March 8, 2018, where they were given the opportunity to speak publicly in front of the guests.

Roker talked about his 15-year-old son’s developmental challenges.

He shared that when his son, Nick, was only 3 years old, he had a hard time learning how to talk, walk, and move.

At present, Nick is now a black belt in Taekwondo.

Roker said he is grateful for every accomplishment his son achieves.

During the speech, Roker persuaded the crowd to be more open-minded and become more accepting of the people who are like Nick.

Talking to People in an exclusive interview, Roker said, “When given the opportunity and the encouragement, and the support, so many of us can just exceed beyond our wildest dreams.”

Roker and Roberts suggested that living a life filled with hope and acceptance helps to overcome adversity.

They said that they have always believed in their son’s capacity even though he is suffering from developmental delays. Now, they said that Nick has exceeded their expectations.

They acknowledged the help of Nick’s therapist, their family, and Nick’s strength as the keys to him being able to surpass all the struggles he had faced.

The couple stated that they have now embarked on a battle to defeat another obstacle, which is to diminish the stigma in relation to developmental delays.

“We hope that more people will be open to expressing and maybe sharing that a lot of us are dealing with challenges in life,” said Roberts.

They aim to share their experiences with them to be able to inspire other families who are going through the exact same thing.
