Despite its size, it is still a third world country and poverty is everywhere, and that is reflected in the environment. The roads are badly maintained and that might have contributed to a school bus crash on April 9, 2018.

A massive investigation has been launched to determine what caused the accident, but it is certain that 27 people, most of them children, have perished, as reported by BBC.

The bus was traversing a mountainous road when it plunged off a cliff. Road accidents are fairly common in India due to its overwhelming population numbers, but no one knows what contributed to the crash.

The incident took placed in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, around 200 miles from Shimla, the state's capital. The children, all under the age of 10, were from Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial School.

According to the source, the institution is located in Nurpur, in India's Kangra district. A resident named Suraskha Devi, tearfully told reporters that she lost four of her grandchildren in the accident and that the only thing that she had left was their photos.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the vehicle skidded as it turned a corner, which caused it to drift off the road. The NDRF, India's National Disaster Relief Force, was called to assist the passengers trapped inside the bus.

As reported by BBC, Narendra Modi, India's Prime Minister, had his staff inform the news stations that he was 'anguished' over the deaths of so many children and that he would pray for them.

The case will now continue to be thoroughly investigated by the proper authorities, and the families of those involved in the crash have already been notified.
