This sandwich combination has seriously divided the internet for a number of years now.

In 2012, a recipe was posted online that had people scratching their heads. Since then, the New York Times picked it up and shared it across the globe.

But as reported by Today, not everyone was charmed by the thought of a peanut butter and pickle sandwich.

Peanut butter has always been a firm favorite of many who eat sandwiches for lunch on a daily basis. But when most are given the option to choose a friend for peanut butter, they will opt for jelly or perhaps honey.

From time to time, someone will get a little crazy and throw bananas on the peanut butter, or even bacon.

But the suggestion of adding pickles instead sent many running for the hills.

While many people love peanut butter and many people love pickles, most will agree that the two do not belong together, no matter how beloved they may be individually.

When the New York Times shared the recipe, they declared that the combination was, in fact, a good one.

"The vinegary snap of the pickles tempers the unctuousness of the peanut butter, and it's an unusual pantry sandwich for when luncheon meats leave you cold," they said.

The post was then shared to Twitter, where many took an instant dislike to the thought of peanut butter and pickles between the same two slices of bread.

Honrary Boyband Member tweeted: "Please put this behind a paywall," while Veera Kaukoniemi added: "Some people just want to watch the world burn.

But while there were plenty who despised the idea, there were others who said that they had tried the combination before as snacks and absolutely loved it.

Brandy MacYeaple also declared it to be an amazing combination, although she had gone a step further and added peanut butter's best friend jelly to the mix as well.

Susan Stevens even suggested that peanut butter be tested alongside olives.

It's also not the first time the combination has been suggested, with plenty of recipes on the web praising it, and a big thumbs up from Food Network star Michael Symon.

Unfortunately for the nay-sayers, it looks like this combo might well be here to stay!
