The friendship between Chip and Shorty did not begin with the reality series. They have known and worked alongside each other for a long time, way before the start of their show that has a theme of home design and renovation.

Shorty was also one of the first persons to be hired for their Magnolia market which is Chip and Joanna's store in Waco, Texas. Since its opening in 2015, the store has become a type of destination, visited by thousands each week.

Chip had explained in his book, “The Magnolia Story,” that he and Shorty used to work together on construction projects and renovations.
