Viral video shows young woman defending Spanish speakers in Colorado store
A video goes viral after a young woman chooses to interfere when another customer got angry at two people for speaking Spanish in a US grocery store.
In what seemed to be such a tense situation in a Colorado grocery store, a young woman was filmed trying to defend two Hispanic customers who were speaking Spanish while shopping. Apparently, another customer got angry at them speaking another language, telling them to speak in English.
The argument that started the feisty exchange started when 64-year-old Linda Dwire insisted that people should only speak English when they are out in public in the US. After the incident, Dwire was arrested by the Garfield County Sheriff's office for two counts of bias-motivated harassment.
In the video, fellow customer Kamira Trent confronted Dwire upon hearing her statement, and she decided to defend the two Hispanic women for speaking their language. This ultimately caught the attention of social media users, who then shared the incident and has since then gone viral.
Clearly bothered by what she has heard, Trent furiously told Dwire to leave the store after her disrespectful comments.
“I’m calling the cops. You leave these women alone! Get out!”
When Dwire tries to tell her that she comes from an entirely different generation and that she has no respect, Trent continued to cut her off and explain that what she was doing was extremely wrong.
“No, I do not. I have respect. You do not harass people.”
After the 64-year-old walked away, she told Trent: "You will lose your country", to which she replied with her original argument, saying:
"You do not harass Hispanic women!"
As for Fabiola Velasquez and her friend Isabel Marin who were the two people caught speaking Spanish in the grocery store, they said that they never thought that this would happen to them and that Dwire was telling them that they should speak in English if they were going to live in America.
“I never thought that this would happen to me. I was with a friend chatting in the store in Spanish and then a woman begins to insult us and tell us if we live in this country we should not have to speak Spanish, only English. I want to thank the girl — who we did not know — for defending us and calling the police. I believe the woman who was yelling at us was arrested. I’ve always seen videos like this online and they used to enrage me and now that it happened to me, I felt a great sense of helplessness.”
